Job Description

CSX Technology is looking for an experienced Senior Operations Research Scientist for the Data Science & Operations Research (DSOR) Group. This individual's domain of expertise should be on the development of heuristic and exact algorithms to industry specific problems, as well as high quality implementation of such solutions. The Senior Operations Research Scientist will serve as a technical OR leadership expert for the entire organization. They will partner with management to identify and research application problems, search for solutions, and make recommendations. The individual should possess high quality coding skills in object oriented programming languages (C#, C++, and/or Java) and be excited about developing software using complex techniques.


They will promote new initiatives, identify areas of critical need, drive change through application development, and work directly with internal customers to enact change, identify business requirements and develop the best course of actions to meet their needs. The Senior Operations Research Scientist is expected to develop decision support systems, manage their implementation, and provide support and maintenance. Collaborating with other organizations within the company are essential parts of the job.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written mediums with all levels of audiences.
  • Generate new OR techniques and drive the successful adoption and integration of OR applications to execute business strategies and achieve results across CSX organizations. Understand business problems and create actionable project plans, while delivering sound OR solutions that exceed customer expectations.
  • Actively engage with business, internal technical and external technology vendor teams to define, design, and develop new business applications.
  • Collaborate with other organizations both internal and external to the company.
  • Provide leadership and technical direction to team members and monitor the deliverables of the technical team.
  • Project management and planning skills, risk mitigation, timeline and deadline assessment. Ability to contingency plan, analyze systems for efficiencies, and develop test case scenarios.
  • Create system designs to facilitate the inter-operability of large-scale business systems.
  • Formulate mathematical models and apply different optimization methods by using or developing requisite software for strategic/tactical/operational decision making, policy formulation, and other related managerial functions
  • Manage project, define scope, plan architecture and system with CSX Technology during conversion of OR tool prototypes into production.
  • Build and implement optimization models in the railroad transportation industry using solution approaches that include linear and mixed integer programming, meta-heuristics, and network flow algorithms
  • Utilize computer programming skills and relational database systems to develop optimization applications
  • Analyze and enhance existing code of projects in development
  • Perform analytics support to various company initiatives
  • Manage OR tool development projects
  • Roll out new OR tools and train end users
  • Convert OR tool prototypes into production
  • Collect data and perform simulation and/or statistical analysis to extrapolate alternate scenarios
  • Manage university and outside consultant projects
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD from an accredited institution in Operations Research, Computer Science or Industrial Engineering
  • Experience required working with relational database systems (SQL, Oracle)
  • Experience in software development or large-scale code bases
  • Experience in development with Gurobi or ILOG CPLEX optimization solvers
