Job Description

In this role, the Engineer will use sound and proven engineering principles, best practices and concepts in order to assist in developing processes and process requirements from internal and external stakeholders.  Working as a member of a technology team, this engineer will collaborate and communicate with other engineers, management, and operators.

As a member of the R&D Advanced Technology team this engineer will lead efforts to understand current and future needs of our manufacturing and automation processes, explore and evaluate new technologies and concepts for meeting those needs, and rapidly demonstrate feasibility of such technologies through rigorous modeling, analysis, prototyping, experimentation, and other risk identification and mitigation activities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and document fixtures and equipment components required to meet process goals from concept to implementation within a regulated quality system. 

  • Design controls and pneumatics to include detail drawings, schematics and documentation.

  • Create and release equipment specifications and drawings, establish calibration and preventative maintenance requirements. 

  • Implement, characterize, and optimize processes, mechanical tests, and fixtures/jigs for assembly, inspection and test through implementation of measurement systems, part inspections, MSA, and capability analysis.

  • Coordinate system development with Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, as part of an early product development team.

  • Specify purchased components, materials, tolerances and machining of fabricated machine parts.

  • Create Bills of Materials (BOMs), used in the production of components and assemblies.

  • Demonstrate hands-on process understanding and provide guidance and training with technicians and pilot plant operators.  Interface with R&D Operators in clean room.

  • Develop and maintain project timelines and provide updates and feedback to project leadership. Communicate project status to engineering management.

  • Identify process risks and track mitigations through standard methods.

  • Assist in scaling up equipment and processes from prototype to pilot to full scale manufacturing.  Provide design and assembly requirements working within scope as determined by business and schedule needs.

  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.

  • Ability to work as part of a design team.  Interested in working on custom or "one off" systems.

  • This position assumes and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with 7+ years related experience, preferred or an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with 5+ years related experience.

  • Strong CAD drafting skills, including correct and judicious application of GD&T, 3D modeling (SolidWorks).

  • Proficient in the design of equipment and tooling that comply with CAL/OHSA safet

  • Knowledge of manufacturing with various types of metal & plastic products used in early feasibility fixture design (Aluminum, Steel, Polycarbonate, Delrin, etc.)

  • Demonstrated technical or process experience in the following areas: 

    • Industrial controls and/or software experience that use programmable logic controllers (PLC) or personal computers (PC)

    • Tooling and fixture design for locating individual parts.

    • Materials handling components (e.g., robotics, actuators, dial tables, feeder bowls, pick-and-place mechanisms). 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with emphasis on report generation

  • Knowledge of MS Office and basic Computer literacy

  • Able to perform job with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment with specific deadlines

  • Work within a team environment, demonstrating leadership and interpersonal abilities


    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Medical Device experience is a strong preference

  • Experience is manufacturing or sustaining environment is a preference

  • Experience in DFA, DFSS or six sigma training

  • Fluidics and electronic experience a plus.
