Job Description

Our client, a global hedge fund with thousands of employees and offices worldwide, is looking to bring aboard a Systems/Storage Engineer in a full-time capacity to join their technology team at their NYC location. The company is a Unix/Linux shop and has recently initiated two large projects including the deployment of EMC technologies (VCE Vblock and Cluster Mode) and a NetApp NAS global deployment to make it more robust with caching devices, GPSS, and Object Storage.

They are looking for someone with extensive hands-on experience using various enterprise storage technologies, including file system administration and backup solutions. There is a strong focus on storage engineering including specification gathering, design, configuration, administration, implementation, and support of a variety of storage solutions. You will be a strong liaison with other UNIX/Linux and Microsoft Engineers as well as with the software development and end user communities.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Work with senior storage engineers in the team and help them with design, improve, and deploy technical and application solutions to meet business requirements that are cost effective and sustainable
  • Deliver conceptual, logical, and physical solution specifications. Translate business requirements to determine appropriate storage/ system solutions
  • Design, deliver and maintain practical, flexible underlying storage solutions for VMWare/VDI deployment worldwide
  • Design, deliver and maintain a practical, flexible scale-out storage solution for high performance grid based (HPC) server farms
  • Design, deliver and maintain replacement solutions for a variety of antiquated storage solutions, and migrate safely to these new solutions
  • Protect the integrity of company data; work with backup teams to ensure proper tape backup requirements are met
  • Design, deliver and maintain Business Continuity capabilities for storage systems where applicable
  • Work closely with other subject matter experts, including other storage professionals as well as Unix, Windows, Architecture, BCP, Backup, and Database specialists
  • Produce documentation on installed systems and their configurations. Perform knowledge transfer by automation of routine tasks to operations team
  • Actively participate in significant incidents, ensuring that root-cause analysis is identified and knowledge gained is applied for process improvement
  • Storage solutions design and sustainability by developing short-term and long-term roadmaps
  • Measure and monitor storage availability, response time, backup window and other metrics
  • Participate in the evaluation of new technologies and releases for Storage


  • At least 5-10 years of professional experience
  • At least 5 years as a storage professional in a financial firm preferred
  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree (Computer Science, Math or Engineering)
  • Thorough knowledge of Unix and Windows operating systems
  • Understanding of NIS, DFS, CIFS and AD concepts
  • Experience in storage capacity planning
  • Experience in storage monitoring
  • Experience and skills in performance tuning storage for large scale grid compute environments
  • Experience with NetApp technologies (C-mode, SnapVault etc.)
  • Experience with VCE Vblock and EMC technologies likes VNX, XtremeIO, vplex and RecoverPoint
  • Scripting (bash, perl, python, PowerShell) is REQUIRED


  • Experience with distributed filesystems such as Lustre, Gluster, GFS and cloud/object storage
  • Business Continuity or Disaster Recovery planning experience
  • Experience with tape/net backup systems
  • Experience with NFSv4
