Job Description

ASSYST is looking for an Analytical Programming Analyst to work for our Client located in Washington, DC.



Our client provides a wide range of data-driven economic analyses and analytics to support rulemaking and policy development; develop cutting-edge, customized risk assessment tools and to inform the public about relevant securities issues through the publication of white papers, working papers, and other research publications.

This project aims to systematically derive insights from various datasets via advanced analytics, which in turn will be used to support the Client s mission.


Project Scope:

The scope of the project will include the following components, which follow the lifecycle of an analytics process:


1. Project definition, scoping, and prioritization

  • Work with stakeholders to define projects and propose potential solutions
  • Prioritize projects based on potential impact and resource costs


2. Backend process development

  • Study existing dev workflow and extrapolate structure/logic to apply to different datasets
  • Work with IT to migrate workflows from our dev cluster to our prod cluster


3. Create a web service + frontend to serve data from Oracle database or Netezza

  • Develop Python-based web analytics dashboard using flask, javascript (along with associated modules/technologies, e..g., Node.js) and HTML
  • Incorporate secure user login using AD authentication and audit functionality
  • Work with IT as necessary (e.g., to provision appropriate resources, etc.)


4. Solution implementation

  • Implement solutions to technical challenges defined in step 1, or extrapolate/systemize existing prototype provided by SEC research staff
  • Integrate solutions to the dashboard (mentioned in item 3 above), either with Python or Javascript
  • 3 Year US residency required
  • Master s degree in information systems, computer science, computational linguistics, applied mathematics, or related technical field such as econometrics, finance, engineering, operations research, or an MBA, and demonstrated experience of four (4) years in analyzing textual datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience using advanced analytic techniques such as latent semantic analysis, named-entity recognition, and part-of-speech tagging.
  • At least one year operational/regulatory analysis experience is preferred.
  • Deep experience in creating, managing, and analyzing large text corpora using a variety of software packages similar to NLTK, gensim, Apache OpenNLP, Stanford NER, and LingPipe, along with experience using packages such as EXCEL, STATA, MATLAB, Mathematica, Perl, Oracle 11g, MS ACCESS, R, S-PLUS, Python or SQL.
  • Demonstrated experience with the Hadoop computational ecosystem, and Oracle relational databases.
  • Knowledge and experience in a systems environment, such as MS Windows, Linux, and UNIX, that facilitates manipulation and processing of data is also required.
