Job Description:
Apex Systems is seeking a Sr Flavor Analytical Scientist for a direct hire opportunity in Richmond, VA with one of the worlds largest producers and marketers of tobacco, cigarettes and related products. The ideal candidate will possess at least three years of experience in the analytical and flavor chemistry. The Sr Flavor Analytical Scientist will work with cross-functional teams, provide input for experimental design and ensure deliverable insights. They will also help ensure instrumentation and analytical methodology are suitable for the project challenges and help identify and implement capability enhancements.
RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop methodologies to identify and quantify flavor compounds.
• Perform studies of products and prototypes to inform product design and scientific investigations.
• Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation, specifically MS, LC/MS, Olfactometry, and related sampling instrumentation.
• Perform data analysis. Document, organize and interpret results for multiple ongoing projects.
• Explore near-line or in-line analytical methodologies to monitor flavor encapsulation and release.
• Demonstrate expertise and strong knowledge of flavor and analytical chemistry. Effectively communicate and collaborate with flavor application scientists. Use technical knowledge to assist internal customers to identify and deliver solutions.
• Identify new flavor analysis methodologies and apply state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation to advance understanding of flavor chemical-sensory interactions.
• Conduct feasibility assessments and make recommendations for applicability and implementation for flavor analysis. Keep abreast of scientific advances in the areas of analytical chemistry and flavor science.

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree in food, Flavor, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or related field, advanced degree highly preferred
• 3+ years of relevant educational and/or work experience.
• Experience in analytical instrumentation, operation, and data interpretation.
• Demonstrated ability in isolation, identification, and quantification of flavor molecules at trace levels.
• Expertise in sample preparation, including extraction techniques such as Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), Solvent Assisted Flavor Extraction (SAFE), Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME), headspace sampling and various other techniques.
• Propose and conduct independent research and multiple projects in terms of planning, analysis, and reporting.
• Expertise in isolation of flavor compounds from complex matrices.
• Experience in chromatographic and spectroscopic instrumentation.
• Broad knowledge in flavor ingredients, their sensory characteristics, stability, and release.
• Strong communication skills (written, verbal and presentation) along with demonstrated ability to work in a cross-functional team.
