Overview
We're looking for a detail-oriented Coding Specialist with a strong background in inpatient medical coding to join our Clinical Content Development team. This role is ideal for a clinically experienced professional who thrives on transforming complex medical information into clear, engaging, and educational content for diverse audiences including coders, clinicians, informaticists, and healthcare administrators. You'll join a multidisciplinary team of physicians, pharmacists, and nurses to ensure that our recommendations are based on trusted, up-to-date clinical evidence.
Role Summary
As a Coding Specialist, you will play a critical role in validating and enhancing the accuracy of our CDS tools. This role goes beyond traditional medical coding - it's about improving coding accuracy at point-of-care, promoting better provider documentation, and contributing to the development of clinical content. You'll work closely with our Clinical Product and Data Science teams to annotate data and refine AI models, helping ensure our product solutions perform reliably and appropriately within real-world clinical environments and workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop high-quality educational content, training materials, and documentation guidelines related to inpatient coding, DRG assignment, and clinical documentation improvement (CDI)
- Translate clinical scenarios and medical records into accurate coding examples and training materials using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT codes
- Collaborate with Data Science to validate clinical logic, support algorithm development, and ensure content aligns various organizational workflows and policies
- Review and edit existing content for clarity, consistency, and compliance with AHIMA and AAPC standards
- Contribute to product development initiatives aimed at improving coding accuracy and provider documentation
Qualifications
Required:
- CPC or CCS certification with an inpatient coding focus
- 5+ years of inpatient coding experience in an acute care setting
- Proficiency in ICD-10-CM/PCS, MS-DRGs, coding compliance, and CDI practices
- Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, team collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Asana
Preferred:
- Familiarity with EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner)
- Current or prior work experience with a coding software (e.g., 3M, Optum)
- 3+ years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting
- Exposure to value-based care or population health initiatives
- Understanding of provider ordering workflows and documentation practices
