Senior Network Engineer

MassDOT is seeking to hire an experienced Senior Network Engineer for the Western/Central MA Area to join our MassDOT IT Networking team. This position will be mainly responsible for support and implementation of networking equipment and software, including firewall, switches, routers, and load balancers.

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for ensuring the proper monitoring, patching, compliance activities, and backups for all network equipment. The incumbent will receive directions from the Network Manager and collaborate with other IT units in the development of current IT plans; and provide technical advice, guidance, and mentoring to other network engineers while delivering innovative solutions and excellent customer service to MassDOT and the citizens of the Commonwealth. They will act as the project manager for small to mid-size projects following the MassDOT IT processes and procedures.

The Senior Network Engineer will provide onsite and remote support on a 24x7 basis to our business customers who have critical response time requirements for their business technology systems. The Senior Network Engineer will work independently and as part of a team to answer service desk calls, urgently analyze technical issues, address escalated issues, work with the project manager on team related projects, and troubleshoot over the phone/onsite/via remote access. The incumbent will also successfully demonstrate the skills required to secure and manage network infrastructures to protect productivity, mitigate threats, and reduce costs.

The primary work location for this role will be at MassDOT District 2 Headquarters, 811 N King St, Northampton, MA 01060. This position is expected to service all MassDOT locations, primarily in the western half of the state. The work schedule for the position is Monday through Friday 9AM to 5PM EST. Work schedule flexibility is required.

Ability to 24/7 on-call rotation, work after-hours or weekends to accommodate operational business needs. This position would be expected to follow a hybrid model of reporting to work that combines in-office workdays and work from home days as needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Create and update all documentation as it pertains to the current state of MassDOT network architecture and new installations
  • Plan, design, and implement future installations of network equipment and capacity planning.
  • Engage in high-level analysis and troubleshooting of network infrastructure.
  • Work independently with approved vendors and other state agencies to resolve network related issues.
  • Perform capacity planning analysis throughout the design and on the existing network to ensure there is sufficient network throughput
  • Perform all work in a cooperative and professional manner with other MassDOT Team members.
  • Provide technical expertise, direction, and leadership to other team members.
  • Perform research and analysis on all requests for problem resolution.
  • Adhere to MassDOT/EOTSS security standards and directives and ensures the MassDOT network environments are compliant with these directives.
  • Participate in audit compliance efforts (e.g., PCI) and ensures that remediation is completed in a timely manner.
  • Travel between MassDOT facilities to maintain and deploy networking equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by supervisor.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • 8 years of network engineering related experience with in-depth exposure in designing, configuring, and troubleshooting
  • complex networks within a large enterprise environment.
  • 5 years of proven experience in a senior capacity with the ability to lead, coordinate, and oversee complex networking projects and bring them to completion.
  • Solid Understanding and hands-on experience with routing protocols (e.g., EIGRP, OSPF, RIP, and BGP) in a mixed environment.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of network infrastructure components such as compute, storage, load balancing (Citrix NetScaler), cabling, administration, network management and monitoring (SolarWinds, Splunk, Cisco Catalyst Center).
  • Experience in Access Control Lists, Firewalls, Citrix NetScaler, VPN technologies, Wi-Fi technologies, Enterprise Wireless technologies, and other security technologies.
  • Strong technical acumen with TCP/IP, VLANS, WANS, routing and switching (Cisco) Previous experience with one or more of the following firewalls: Checkpoint, Cisco, Juniper or Palo Alto.
  • Knowledge of AWS network architecture.
  • Knowledge of VLAN technology, VTP and STP protocols.
  • Demonstrate functional knowledge on how to connect public and private networks while not compromising network stability.
  • Demonstrate functional knowledge of cable standards, multi/single mode fiber, proprietary and standard serial communication protocols.
  • Demonstrates fundamental knowledge of PCI/PII requirements.
  • Knowledge of T1, T3, SONET, DWDM and OC technologies.
  • Experience with Metro-Ethernet technologies.
  • Experience in Network monitoring and management tools.
  • Experience in VOIP and QoS.
  • Strong ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in creating and updating Network Visio Diagrams.
  • Desire and willingness to work in a collaborative, innovative, flexible, and team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work calmly and constructively under pressure and meet deadlines; the ability to manage and keep track of multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergencies, program changes or production requirements.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of statistics.

Education and Certification(s):
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience required.
  • Cisco Certifications (CCNA and CCNP or CCIE) is desired, but not required.
