Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Systems Engineer with strong Mechanical Engineering background to provide mass properties engineering and system engineering support for launch and in-space vehicles for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) and the Human Landing System (HLS) programs, with potential for derivative work in other NASA programs. This position is within the EV73 Systems Analysis & Human Systems Integration Branch and plays a critical role in guiding vehicle mass properties analysis and integration.

The selected candidate will interface with multidisciplinary engineering teams, customers, and stakeholders, and provide technical leadership in mass properties analysis, reporting, and oversight of contractor work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight and insight of contractor-developed mass properties data.
  • Support and review systems engineering products at key milestones.
  • Perform static and time-sequence mass properties estimation including sensitivity and uncertainty analyses.
  • Develop Technical Performance Metric (TPM) charts and comprehensive mass properties reports (mass, CG, moments of inertia, products of inertia).
  • Support trajectory and GN&C design input through detailed mass properties data.
  • Execute conceptual mass properties estimations, bottoms-up calculations, and weight control planning.
  • Coordinate technical integration of mass properties analyses across disciplines.
  • Collaborate with design and stress analysts to identify mass optimization opportunities.
  • Work with GN&C, operations, and vehicle performance teams to enhance performance objectives.
  • Develop or enhance tools and processes to improve mass properties analysis capabilities.
  • Validate and verify input/output data from the NASA Mass Properties Analysis and Reporting Tool (MPART).

Required Qualifications:

BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Systems Engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Masters with at least 3 years of experience, or a BS with at least 5 years of experience.

Required:

  • Experience with mass properties engineering for aerospace vehicles and subsystems.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB with experience developing or modifying custom applications.
  • Familiarity with CREO or other 3D CAD modeling software.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, interface control documents, and technical specifications.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills for systems and component-level mass assessments.
  • Effective problem-solving, communication, and technical leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Preferred/Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with cryogenic, solid fuel, or other fluid mass properties management.
  • Participation in weight integration and mass properties working groups.
  • Use of CAD tools like Pro-E/CREO and database applications.
  • Familiarity with NASA or contractor development environments and NASA systems engineering processes.

A technical proficiency assessment may be required as part of the selection process to evaluate relevant Systems and Mechanical Engineering knowledge.
