What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division is seeking an Engineering Technologist for the Instrumentation and Controls (IC) Group.

The successful candidate will work as a member of the AOT-IC Controls Hardware team, which specializes in developing and maintaining instrumentation and controls (I&C) systems for the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) accelerator. The team's core capabilities include control system integration, instrumentation engineering, developing beam diagnostics electronics, PCB design, ECAD/MCAD, and network and timing signal distribution.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in the team both in supporting LANSCE I&C systems, and by researching, developing, and implementing instrumentation and control system solutions for small to medium-sized projects. In addition to supporting operations, the selected candidate will be responsible for expanding capabilities of the group such as by developing test stands for production I&C systems or interfacing with other AOT organizations and outside customers looking for small non-LANSCE control systems. The successful candidate must communicate effectively and work independently. With minimal supervision they should have the ability to assume responsibility for projects and successfully meet project deadlines.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Project Management
  • Experience in the development of project plans, managing scope, schedule, and budget, and identifying and managing project risks.
  • Demonstrated experience of utilizing the engineering design cycle: requirements gathering, design, implementation, testing, commissioning, and support to independently complete projects.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple assignments to meet deadlines, which will require you to possess high attention to detail and strong organizational skills

Technical Knowledge
  • Demonstrated experience using electronic test equipment (i.e. oscilloscope, DVM, pulse generator, etc.) to troubleshoot and repair at a component level.
  • Demonstrated experience using technical specifications, technical manuals and diagrams with the ability to utilize the information to develop a final system design.
  • Experience conducting research, development, and testing in the areas of controls and instrumentation.
  • Experience deploying data acquisition or microcontroller systems.
  • Ability to prepare, review, and document technical reports, electrical schematics, and assembly drawings.
  • Background in system design, including electrical modeling of analog or digital signals (e.g. PSpice).

Communication
  • Advanced communication skills to effectively collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other professionals on projects.
  • Promote and foster a work environment free from harassment and discrimination
  • Experienced in and available for 24/7 on-call support on a rotating basis.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with the utilization of software to support the deployment of designed systems and assigned projects (e.g. SCPI, I2C, SPI, or LabVIEW).
  • Demonstrated experience soldering and/or IPC J-STD-001 Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies certification.
  • Experience terminating and troubleshooting fiber optics communication links.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
