This role is for an experienced Product Design Manager who will help shape the vision and UX standards for a growing team. Reporting into the Head of Product Design, you'll lead a team of 3-5 designers focussed on evolving our consumer-facing experiences. You are a hands-on leader who mentors and empowers designers, models and creates an inclusive culture, and inspires excellence and innovation in our craft. Here, you will focus on elevating the digital products that reimagine how our world class editorial can meet users across web, app, and emerging technologies. You will collaborate with product, engineering, editorial, and business leaders to inform strategy and craft intuitive and compelling experiences that meet our editorial mission and business goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of designers to consistently deliver high-quality, user-centric experiences. Set a vision that motivates and inspires.
  • Outline goals and develop skills of those on your team in support of craft and careers. Create a supportive culture of psychological safety where designers push and challenge each other.
  • Fiercely advocate for our external and internal users, using data and insights. Know when and how to gather more.
  • Serve as an expert guide and resource in UX design principles, frameworks, practices, and tools. Consider holistic approaches to user journeys, and connect the design dots between our agile teams. Lead workshops that champion design thinking and pull other disciplines into the process.
  • Bring an aesthetic eye and high-bar for visual design execution. Advance our design language in ways that prioritize usability, accessibility, native approaches, and forward-looking design excellence.
  • Network and build constructive relationships across product, engineering, editorial, and business leadership to ensure we're working well, and on the right things. Inform strategy with design judgement in support of business goals.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills, whether in one-on-one or group situations. Communicate complex ideas, goals and problems, in person and in documentation, in a way that is accessible even to those unfamiliar with the project.
  • Lead executive stakeholder design conversations. Be a strong voice for the user, design, and your team while listening and adapting to feedback. Keep conversations on-track and craft actionable next steps.
  • Prioritize effectively, and advise agile teams on design prioritization. Regularly assess roadblocks and process opportunities that allow us to work quickly, efficiently, with high impact. Set design standards for both iterative work and 0-1 projects alike.
  • Drive solutions that successfully increase subscriber engagement, retention, and consumer perception of our digital products.

You'll need to have:
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in design or other design-related field
  • 8+ years of digital product design experience
  • 2+ years of people management experience at a later-stage tech or media company, motivating and developing talent
  • A passion for developing scalable design strategies and influencing product strategies that drive design excellence and deliver measurable results
  • Background in end-to-end experience delivery (user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity visuals)
  • A strong understanding and history of partnering with engineering, analytics, and user research
  • Excellent presentation and communications skills
  • A willingness to roll up your sleeves, get in the details, and help the team when needed to move a project forward
  • An open-minded, empathetic approach to leadership with a talent for retaining diverse, high-performing teams
  • Expertise in accessibility and design system best practices across devices

Strong candidates have:
  • Experience in content and consumption focussed B2C products, working with both creators and consumers alike.
  • Subscription-based product background, delivering optimal user experiences for anonymous, registered and subscription users alike.
