Scala Engineer I

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce is seeking a Software Engineer I to join our team in support of a major telecommunications client. This is a remote contract opportunity for an early-career engineer who is eager to learn, grow, and make an impact within a large-scale data platform environment.

Summary:
Our client is looking for a motivated individual with experience in Scala and Spark, and ideally some exposure to streaming technologies like Kafka or Kinesis. The role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in functional programming, big data, and modern cloud-based architectures.

Responsibilities:
* Collaborate with senior engineers to design, develop, and maintain large-scale data processing workflows using Scala and Spark
* Support the development and operation of streaming data pipelines leveraging Kafka, Kinesis, and other real-time data tools
* Participate in troubleshooting, debugging, and optimizing data pipeline performance and reliability
* Write efficient, maintainable, and testable code following best practices in functional programming
* Use SQL to explore datasets, analyze schemas, investigate data issues, and validate results
* Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives
* Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other engineering teams to ensure high-quality data availability

REQUIREMENTS:
* 1-3 years of software engineering experience or equivalent academic/project work
* Strong programming skills in Scala; familiarity with functional programming principles
* Hands-on experience with Apache Spark for batch or streaming data processing
* Exposure to Kafka, Kinesis, or similar streaming platforms
* Solid understanding of SQL for data exploration and analysis
* Strong desire to learn and grow in a fast-paced data engineering environment

Nice to Have:
* Experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, or AWS cloud services
* Familiarity with large-scale data systems, governance, or monitoring tools
* Interest in modern data architecture and scalable pipeline design

The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.

We offer comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability & ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
