What You Will Do

The Physical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy group (C-PCS) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a talented and experimentally adept software and data engineer in spectral measurement, analysis, and data exploitation. Our group engages in multi-disciplinary research focused on the use of spectroscopy to investigate a variety of complex problems. R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200):
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of novel algorithms and software in collaboration with project principal investigators, will be responsible for data analytics and reporting and in some instances will be delegated to lead specific aspects of a project or an entire project. The candidate will have administrative responsibilities that surround the performance of complex computational work - such as directing the design, procurement, installation, and maintenance of specialized computing resources. The candidate will also be expected to contribute ideas to proposals, and co-author scientific publications.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Track record of making safety and security an integral part of every task.
  • Focused areas of research in our group include biological detection, chemistry, remote sensing, energetic materials, nanoparticle science, actinide science and space applications. The group is seeking a R&D engineer with demonstrated modern machine learning expertise (e.g. Large Language Models, Generative Models) applied to one or more of these focused areas of research.
  • History of contribution to computational research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of algorithms, software, and hardware solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
  • Experience designing, building, and controlling software or data systems for research or development of new techniques.
  • Experience assisting with technical products such as journal papers and reports, or intellectual property.
  • Demonstrated history of collaborating effectively with colleagues from wide-ranging backgrounds, ages, and skill sets.
  • Experience working effectively independently and in a team.
  • Maintains state-of-the-art technical expertise and knowledge within your discipline.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, as evidenced by publications and the cover letter.
  • Ability to obtain a Q and SCI clearance, requiring ship.
Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Skills:
  • Demonstrated experience conducting collaborative experimental R&D in at least some of these areas:
  • Familiarity with analyzing large, complex data sets with Large Language Models and Generative Models.
  • History of developing tools to implement state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms for spectral data.
  • Familiarity with software engineering principles and tools including Python, PyTorch, and git.
  • Active Q / SCI clearances
Work Location: The work location for this position is fully onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires ship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
