Business Unit Control Manager Skills

  1. Strong Governance & Compliance Knowledge

Business Unit Control Managers must have:

  • Deep understanding of enterprise issue management policies and procedures especially those governing 1LOD/2LOD interactions, Effective Challenge, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with regulatory standards and internal audit expectations, including ORM, Compliance, and Audit protocols.
  • Ability to apply control design, operating effectiveness, and control gap classifications accurately.
  1. Risk & Issue Management Expertise

They should be able to:

  • Accurately identify, vet, and classify issues within mandated timelines (7-day, 14-day, and 25-day windows).
  • Perform and validate root cause analysis (RCA) for control gaps and weaknesses.
  • Assign and track Corrective Actions with clear accountability, milestones, and deadlines.
  • Partner effectively with Accountable Executives (B70+), Issue Owners (B45+), and Corrective Action Owners.
  1. Project Management & Process Discipline

Given the tight timelines:

  • Proven deadline management skills meeting all time-bound requirements (e.g., 25 days for Corrective Action creation, 10-day approval cycles, 90-day validation timelines).
  • Familiarity with project lifecycle management tools and phase-based tracking.
  • Comfort with tollgate meeting coordination and maintaining detailed approval evidence.
  1. Advanced Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

A successful BUCM must:

  • Navigate complex stakeholder maps involving multiple lines of defense, executives, and auditors.
  • Deliver clear, concise, and accurate status updates both in Archer and via monthly progress meetings.
  • Handle Effective Challenge responses diplomatically while maintaining an audit-ready documentation trail.
  • Possess strong collaboration skills to work with multiple business units and escalate ownership issues quickly.
  1. Technical Proficiency with Archer & Control Frameworks

Since Archer is the central platform:

  • High proficiency in Archer data entry, issue tracking, and document attachment protocols.
  • Ability to link controls in PRSA and RCSA, including creating placeholder controls where gaps exist.
  • Understanding of control frameworks and their integration into enterprise risk systems.
  1. Analytical & Decision-Making Skills

They should demonstrate:

  • Ability to assess impact severity ratings (Critical, High, Moderate, Low) in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Skills to evaluate control performance over a sustainability period.
  • Judgement to determine when Corrective Actions are fit-for-purpose and meet audit and compliance standards.
  1. Ownership Mindset & Accountability

Lastly, your candidates should:

  • Exhibit full lifecycle ownership of issues from identification to validation.
  • Show accountability for quality and sustainability of corrective actions.
