Job Description

ECS is seeking a Data Mesh Architect to work in our Arlington, VA office / remote .

The Data Mesh Architect will serve as the technical and strategic lead for designing and implementing the foundational components of a large-scale data mesh environment for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This role is responsible for architecting domain-oriented data products, establishing federated governance frameworks, aligning with enterprise security/privacy requirements, and integrating modern data technologies (cloud-native, streaming, cataloging, Canonical Controlled Vocabularies, ontologies, and knowledge graph elements) to enable decentralized data ownership and scalable analytics across mission programs.

Ideal Candidate Experience

  • Enterprise Data Architecture: 10+ years designing complex data ecosystems, including conceptual, logical, and physical architectures.
  • Cloud Data Platforms (AWS-focused preferred): 7+ years with cloud-native data engineering and architecture, including services such as Redshift, EMR, Glue, S3, Lambda, Lake Formation, or Databricks/Snowflake.
  • Data Mesh or Data Fabric Implementations: 5+ years in modern distributed data architectures, preferably in federal or large regulated environments.
  • Data Governance & Metadata Management: 5+ years implementing governance frameworks, data cataloging, lineage, access controls, and domain-level stewardship.
  • Data Engineering & Product Development: 8+ years building scalable data pipelines, APIs, and reusable data assets using Python, Spark, SQL, or similar tools.
  • Mission-Critical System Integration: 5+ years integrating legacy, cloud, and cross-agency systems with strong knowledge of interoperability standards.
Salary Range: $160,000 - $190,000

Desired Skills

  • Expert understanding of data mesh principles: domain-driven design, self-serve data platforms, federated governance, and data product lifecycle management.
  • Proficiency with AWS analytics stack, Databricks, or Snowflake; skilled in automation/infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CloudFormation).
  • Knowledge of federal security and compliance frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with data catalog tools (Collibra, Alation, AWS Glue Data Catalog) and governance frameworks.
  • Ability to translate mission needs into technical architectures and communicate clearly with executives, engineers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with semantic layer/knowledge graph technologies.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills for guiding domain teams through data mesh adoption.
