Summary of the Position
The Database Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing database systems to ensure data accuracy, security, and accessibility across an organization. They play a critical role in managing digital information and supporting data-driven decision-making.
Essential Duties:
Database Design & Implementation
Develop and deploy database architectures tailored to business needs.
Create data models and define relationships between data entities.
Maintenance & Optimization
Monitor performance and tune databases for speed and efficiency.
Conduct regular updates and patches to ensure system reliability.
Data Integrity & Security
Enforce data validation rules and integrity constraints.
Implement access controls, encryption, and backup strategies to protect sensitive
information.
Non-Essential Duties:
User Training & Education
Occasionally conduct workshops or tutorials for staff on basic database usage or data
entry protocols.
Report Generation
Assist in creating custom reports for departments using database queries, though
this may fall more under business intelligence roles.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Participate in meetings or planning sessions with non-technical teams to understand
data needs or offer insights.
Software Testing Support
Help QA teams test database-related features during application development, even if
not directly responsible for testing.
Responsibilities:
Design and maintain databases including database architecture, database structures, and data dictionaries. Additionally, perform data recovery, cloud, and backup operations, as well as evaluate and recommend improvements to the cybersecurity posture, database monitoring, troubleshooting, performance tuning, repair, backup and restoration as well as database patches installation and upgrades be conducted.
Transition data into and out of IT Enterprise databases and data environments via manual and automated means.
Transition data between different classification domains within IT Enterprise via manual and automated means at regular intervals based on operational demand.
Identify, plan, implement, test, and maintain data storage plans, process, and solutions for IT includes physical, virtual, and cloud capabilities
Required Qualifications:
Secret Clearance
IAT II Certifications IAW DoD (For DoD IAT Level 2, the two required certs are as follows: CompTIA Security+ or SSCP (Systems Security Certified Practitioner) Other security-related certs that are accepted (in addition to the above two certs) as well for the DoD IAT Level 2 include the following as well: CCNA Security; CySA+; GICSP; GSEC).
Ability to work within an SIPRNET On-Prem and Azure environment.
3 years or more experience in SQL, MySQL, Oracle or other similar databases.
Working Conditions
Standard office environment.
May require extended hours during project deadlines or system implementations.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods in stationary position at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
The person in this position needs to occasionally move throughout the office, including across longer distances such as from the building entrance to the workspace.
