Job Details

Title: Tooling Engineer
Location: Redmond, WA onsite
Job Description:
Investigation, evaluation, and selection of process and tooling technologies capable of delivering part designs to meet product requirements.
Provide continuous feedback on manufacturing feasibility to product design team and industrial designers.
Detailed tooling project planning to successfully execute on delivery dates & selection of tooling partners for participation in the delivery of chosen technologies.
Drive new technology adoption for finishing techniques and integration to fulfill the goals of industrial design.
Research materials (plastics/metals/glass/composites) and tooling technologies to deliver on product expectations/requirements.
Drive vendor capability assessments, and quotations for prototype and production tooling, manufacturing and finishing processes with depth of detail on capital equipment planning, production materials requirements, fixturing and post machining planning, finishing, set-up costs, rates and lead-times.
In conjunction with device design team, procurement, other functional groups to make tooling vendors selections.
Coordinates all activities relating to tool and manufactured part planning to make initial cost estimates supporting the development schedules, and cost down planning to meet cost goals by production launch.
Detailed review of all tool designs with vendors.
Complete PPAP responsibility on all tooling and manufacturing processes to meet development schedules, quality requirements and yield rates. Sign off responsibility on new tooling and manufacturing process readiness for volume production.
Drive continuous improvements to optimize yield rates and process capabilities to meet business needs and cost goals.
Interface across multiple product development disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, CMD, CMF, Procurement, Supplier Quality, Manufacturing/Assembly, Program Management.
Qualifications:
B.S. Mechanical Engineering, Plastics engineering and/or equivalent experience.
8+ years of experience in med-high volume tooling and manufacturing methods for high end electronic devices.
Extensive experience in:
- Injection molding (including; multi-shot and insert molding).
- Plastics and metals materials knowledge.
- Compression molding / Liquid injection molding.
- Metal fabrication methods; progressive die / stage tooling for sheet metal, die-casting (aluminum / magnesium), Metal injection molding, Forging/Forming, Extrusion and medium-high volume machining.
Familiar with numerous finishing processes; including but not limited to: PVD, NCVM, Anodizing, plating, painting, polishing, chemical etching.
Proven track record in selection and management of multiple vendors to support development schedules and volume production.
Very good knowledge of part manufactured costs estimates.
Excellent track record in dealing with fast turn prototyping tooling.
3D CAD Skills (Pro-Engineer) preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication and program management skills.
