Launch Operations Engineer II - Cryogenics

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

This team owns all cryogenic systems for New Glenn including both ground and vehicle systems. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers and technicians, you will:

• Contribute to the test and operation of the New Glenn orbital launch vehicle
• Be responsible for processing flight systems, from receipt at the launch site through launch and landing
• Ensure the launch vehicle and associated ground systems are prepared for flight
• Be responsible for operating and maintaining ground systems
• Work with other element teams to develop operational requirements, advocate for design-for-operations, and provide inputs for existing system improvements
• Oversee commissioning of new or modified systems at the Blue Origin Orbital Launch Site
• Author detailed procedures and help develop test equipment to complete integrated flight systems testing
• Author and run commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting and operational procedures and work instructions
• Implement and execute corrective and preventative maintenance programs for ground systems
• Collaborate on system CONOPs and safety and process hazards analysis
• Coordinate with suppliers and internal teams on costs, schedule, and technical design requirements
• Second and/or third shift rotations & weekends may be necessary
• Occasional travel may be necessary

Minimum qualifications:

• B.S. degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering (or similar technical discipline)
• 1+ years relevant experience / experience in a similar role
• Hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting mechanical and/or piping systems during testing or launch activities
• Knowledge of fluid components typical in aerospace tubing and piping systems (valves, regulators, pumps, etc.)
• Familiarity with installation and fabrication methods of piping systems (pipe stock, fittings, connections, valves, fasteners, structural members, fitting, welding, etc.)
• Ability to read and interpret fabrication and installation drawings and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
• Demonstrated ability with self-starting and managing tasks along with team collaboration
• Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion

Desired qualifications:

• Advanced engineering degree
• 3+ years of relevant experience
• Knowledge of propellant loading and transfer processes
• Recent experience with launch vehicle integration and launch operations
• Ability to perform fluid flow estimate calculations
• Control room or operations experience in an intense, real-time and high consequence environment
• Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), or simulations testing
• Experience with operation and/or design of typical aerospace fuel, oxidizer and pneumatic systems
• Familiarity with test equipment, such as multimeters, dew point meters, vacuum equipment, regulator panels
• Experience writing and executing test plans and procedures for qualification, acceptance, and operations of hazardous and/or safety critical components and systems
• Understanding of design lifecycle documentation and configuration control
• Knowledge of ASME B31.3 and in-field oversight of construction, testing and/or operations of piping systems
• Knowledge of precision cleaning processes / levels and passivation of stainless steel
• Knowledge of marine environment corrosion mitigation (material and coatings selection)
• Knowledgeable in Qt/QML, Simulink, MATLAB, Python, or Git
