CAD Designer - Mechanical

Hybrid: This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location (Warren Tech Center) three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role:

General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities. Our ECU Mechanical & Thermal Design team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on developing mechanical and thermal design of next generation ECUs (Electronic Control Units). The team is responsible for developing Mechanical and Thermal design of new next gen ECU designs, with math, CAD and analysis. The team also reviews and approves production ECU design changes.

We are seeking a high-performing CAD Designer interested in leading the in-house development of GM electronics design. You will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, and review of Electrical Controllers, for our next generation SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture. You will be depended upon to build strong partnerships with internal and external customers.

What You'll do:
  • Execute CAD design of ECUs per program timing, leading to successful launch of the product.
  • Work with cross functional teams for the selection of sealed/ un-sealed Headers & connectors for Power, High Speed Signals, communication signals, RF signals, I/O's etc.. to support ECU's designs and ensure compatibility with vehicle packaging constraints, thermal environments, and electrical requirements.
  • Header's integration into plastic housing, Bus bar design, material selection, sealing design, soldering processes, headers assembly to the PCB mounting etc.
  • Design mechanical components including castings, injection moldings, stampings, seals, electrical interface, PCBA mounts, connector interface and fastening etc.
  • Perform design calculations, GD&T and tolerance stacks.
  • Create 3D CAD, 2D CAD & lead CAD reviews with stakeholders.
  • Work with suppliers to support prototype and production designs, support DFx, DFMEA & PFMEA.
  • Work with electrical engineers and PCBA designers to integrate components into electro-mechanical systems.
  • Build partnerships with functional peers internally within GM and externally at Tier 1 suppliers to align on ECU design per development cycles.
  • Communicate design progress and risks to stakeholders and customers.
  • Solid organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • College Apprenticeship with minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience in the Electromechanical ECU designs.
  • Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (NX and Teamcenter preferred, but not required), 2D drawings, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and assembly.
  • Experience with Headers & Connectors design, testing & qualification for USCAR, Bus bar design, integration to PCB & Mechanical housing.
  • Strong analytical skills and engineering fundamentals in solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, and manufacturing
  • Hands-on experience engaging with electronics manufacturers.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
  • Experience with liquid and passively cooled ECU designs, experience with UG-NX,.
  • Mechanical design of Connectors, Headers, terminals, bus bars, PCBAs, computers, or automotive electronics
  • Strong understanding of thermal solutions and their application.
  • Knowledge of vibrational and structural analysis
  • Experience with ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning & tolerancing standards.
