POSITION SUMMARY
Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

- Studies specifications, such as blueprints, sketches, damaged parts, or description of parts to be replaced, to determine dimensions and tolerances of piece to be machined, sequence of operations and tools, materials and machines required. \n
- Measures, marks and scribes dimensions and reference points to layout stock for machining. \n
- Learns how to set up and operate metal removing machines, such as manual lathe, milling machines, and saws to machine parts to specifications. \n
- Verifies conformance of work piece to specifications, using measuring instruments. \n
- Positions and secures work piece in holding device, such as chuck or collet, or on surface plate or worktable with such devices as vices, V-blocks and angle plates. \n
- Uses hand tools, such as files, grinders, to fit and assemble parts to assemblies or mechanisms. \n
- Verifies dimensions and alignment with measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gages and gage blocks. \n
- Ability to drill, tap and mill flats on mill and turn and bore on lathe. \n
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers. \n
- Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders. \n
- Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers. \n
- Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations. \n
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines. \n
- Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process. \n
- Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work. \n
- Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts. \n
- Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs. \n
- Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled. \n
- Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. \n
- Position and fasten work pieces. \n
- Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency. \n
- Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter. \n
- Program computers and electronic instruments such as numerically controlled machine tools. \n
- Set controls to regulate machining, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media. \n
- Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information. \n
- Dismantle machines or equipment, using hand tools and power tools, to examine parts for defects and replace defective parts where needed. \n
- Support metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties and mathematics. \n
- Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools. \n
- Must be able to communicate effectively, get along with co-workers, and deal with colleagues effectively and professionally. \n
- A continuous pattern of regular and prompt attendance is required. \n

SKILLS & ABILITIES
Education : High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience : Two to four years related experience operating a lathe or vertical mill.
Vocational school or machine trades class is helpful.
Computer Skills
Ability to be trained to use Syteline effectively.
Certificates & Licenses
Ability to be trained to operate warehouse equipment such as a hand truck.
Ability to pass Hi-lo driver exam and receive a hi-lo license.
