In this exciting role as Senior Software-Firmware Engineer, you will develop custom embedded test benches in emulation that monitor and control an implantable medical device embedded system to enable hardware and firmware development and verification. The ideal candidate is a software engineer with full software development lifecycle knowledge, understanding of embedded design, development and testing, and experience creating project deliverables in the medical device industry.

This position is in Mounds View, MN within the Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) operating unit and requires on-site presence three or more days a week.

A Day in the Life

As a Senior Software Engineer in our Embedded Systems Environments team, you will develop or enhance custom embedded test environments capabilities, and methods that enable the test and verification of an embedded system. This role involves working with a variety of emulation and prototyping platforms, such as Cadence Palladium and Protium, to create robust test environments that run in both emulation and real-time scenarios. A day in the life includes: collaborating with embedded system ASIC designers, firmware developers, and software engineers to understand test requirements, test conditions, and new functionality required; leveraging software skills to develop and enhance the test environment and enable test automation; collaborate with other engineers to solve problems and debug issues; develop tests and execute test method validations; and, identify opportunities to increase productivity and effectiveness of the test environment.

Responsibilities include the following and other duties may be assigned.
  • Develop and maintain software for embedded test environments that simulate real-world conditions for medical devices in both emulation and FPGA prototyping environments, document and troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Use a variety of software troubleshooting tools including OTS and custom-built.
  • The candidate must have the ability to work well with a variety of individuals ranging from various engineering disciplines.
  • Applies the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the system development life cycle to support the generation of such engineering applications and wide range of products.
  • Define test system requirements by collaborating with medical device embedded system hardware and firmware engineers.
  • Understand medical device functionality by reviewing hardware and firmware documentation, collaborating with designers, and analyzing device code.
  • Provide guidance to technicians and less experienced engineers.

Must Have (Minimum Requirements)

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering or related field with minimum 4 years of relevant technical experience

OR
  • Advanced degree with minimum of 2 years of technical experience

Nice to Have (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Embedded software development in C/C++ language
  • Experience with multi-threaded applications
  • Experience working with embedded systems, interpreting data sheets and interface specifications
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively to troubleshoot and debug complex system issues.
  • Experience in technical specification and report writing
  • Experience with test automation and verification
  • Experience with emulation and prototyping platforms.
  • Experience with method validations and regulatory requirements for medical devices.
  • Experience in circuit design and simulation.
  • Experience using JTAG to control and test hardware.
  • Experience with C#, Java, Kotlin or similar high-level language.
  • Experience scripting with Python, Bash, Make, and Makefiles.
  • Familiar with Linux operating system.
  • Familiar with Bluetooth LE and other wireless protocols and communication standards.
  • Familiar with Jenkins for continuous integration and automated testing
  • Experience with FPGA programming.
  • Familiar with or interested in learning RTL, hardware emulation, and RTL acceleration.
  • Experience in software design for medical devices

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$108,800.00 - $163,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
