Work Arrangement
Onsite - This position requires the employee to be onsite five days a week. Primary work location will be the General Motors Global Technical Center in Warren, MI.
The Role
As a General Assembly Automation Application Specialist, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing advanced automation solutions for parts and processes within General Assembly. This highly technical position requires deep expertise in robotics, vision systems, tooling design, and automation processing.
You will tackle complex manufacturing challenges, pioneering innovative technologies and processes to automate vehicle assembly. The role demands a high level of autonomy, strategic thinking, and the ability to navigate ambiguity to deliver robust, scalable manufacturing solutions. Independent technical judgment and discernment are essential.

What You'll Do (Job Responsibilities)
- Serve as a fully qualified technical leader with deep expertise in your domain and broad knowledge of related areas.
- Develop and implement automation applications that improve assembly processes, leveraging robotics, vision systems, and custom tooling.
- Independently analyze complex challenges, break them into actionable initiatives, and deliver innovative, scalable solutions.
- Apply advanced analytical and problem-solving techniques to resolve non-standard, high-impact technical issues.
- Ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety protocols, automation best practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the development of manufacturing requirements, Bill of Process (BOP), and Bill of Equipment (BOE) for automation systems.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and external vendors to align on technical solutions and project goals.
- Use data and strategic communication to influence stakeholders, build consensus, and drive decision-making.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, sharing expertise and providing support on complex technical issues.
- Act as a change agent, influencing broader functional areas through thought leadership and technical credibility.
- Own the end-to-end delivery of automation solutions, taking accountability for results and continuous improvement.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent.
- 5+ years in manufacturing engineering with a focus on automation, engineering practices, and project execution.
- Technical Expertise
- Proficient in robotics, vision systems, tooling design, and/or automation processing.
- Strong understanding of general assembly processes and automation integration.
- Experience with equipment processing, throughput optimization, and manufacturing specs.
- Skilled in developing and implementing automation solutions, with applications such as container picking, part installation, and other material handling or assembly processes.
- Capable of evaluating new technologies and leading process/tooling improvements.
- Lean Manufacturing & Safety
- Solid knowledge of lean principles and continuous improvement.
- Strong understanding of safety standards and compliance.
- Project & People Leadership
- Proven ability to manage complex projects independently.
- Experience in equipment installation, construction, and mentoring team members.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and external vendors.
- Ability to define manufacturing requirements, automation specs, and BOEs.
- Skilled in global collaboration and applying lessons learned from benchmarking.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- High-Volume Manufacturing:
- Proven experience in fast-paced, high-volume environments with a focus on equipment reliability and maintainability.
- Data & Process Analysis:
- Skilled in data analysis and SPC (statistical process control) to drive continuous improvement.
- Leadership:
- 3+ years in a supervisory or management role with a track record of team development and performance.
- Project Methodologies:
- Familiar with Agile, Six Sigma, and other structured project management approaches.
- Education:
- Master's degree in Engineering or related field preferred.
