Job Details

The UNIX/Linux System Administrator, Principal will be the lead technical person on the team. They will be expected to do technical analysis, develop full project plans and research new technologies. They will work with the senior admins to make sure they understand project tasks and designs along with updating them on the new technologies. They will have, similar to the senior position, a leadership role in the full life cycle support of Unix and Linux servers, including: installation, build, hosting design and service deployment, on-site and remote administration, user support, performance monitoring and tuning, and capacity planning.

The selected individual will be expected to work independently with a minimum of guidance or direction. The individual needs to be able to co-ordinate resources within the team to complete project tasks. He/she will report directly to the ESM Engineering manager and will assist with technical management of the team and interaction with the clients.
This Principal position requires a technical specialist, who is considered an expert in their field. They should have at least 7 years experience in an administration role and 3 years experience working in cloud environments. In addition to ensuring the UNIX hosting environment is operating according to the established standards and ensuring that it is capable of supporting growth, the successful candidates will be required to lead the development of standards and procedures, both operational and functional. The selected candidate will provide escalation point for all issued not resolved by the other support staff.

This position may support different shifts to enable 24x7 support; required to carry a supplied phone and be on call. Also may be required to work long and varied schedules required by large, diverse and complex USPS production environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Installs and maintains ESM related software products.
Develops and implements operational management process and procedures.
Develop growth plans to ensure that the hosting environment is capable of supporting the projected growth
Develop and implement procedures that support proactive problem detection and avoidance, including disaster recovery planning and implementation.
Develop and maintain project plans in accordance with US Postal Service standards.
Provides management of infrastructure and applications changes.
Maintains accurate documentation and quality control.
Supports the design and configuration of complex system landscapes.
Works with alert monitoring tools such as Zabbix, AppDynamics, Neustar, Splunk Observability along with all the native cloud monitoring tools.
Will have a good understanding of all monitoring tools and can speak to many of the monitoring opportunities the tool can bring teams needing monitoring help.
Develops and executed project plans to remediate any security finding associated with our tools.
Works with security management systems, and backup/restore systems.
Performs user assistance, training and information sharing.
Provides periodic reports to users and managers of systems status.
Provides action plan for resolution of any/all faults detected.
Performs isolation testing of problem equipment and or software.
Provides documentation of all solutions to problems.
Provides reports with intent to share solutions found.
Provides and implements escalation process and or procedures.
Develops recommendations and procedures for implementation of new hardware/software products, suitable for presentations.
Provides leadership and work guidance to less experienced personnel.
