Role: Fiber Splicing Technician

Location: Fort Meade, MD (5 days onsite)

Duration: Contract (at least 5 months likely extension) Citizenship: active Secret clearance (TS/SCI clearance preferred)

  • Fiber Splicing and Termination: Precisely splice fiber optic cables using various techniques such as fusion and mechanical splicing to ensure optimal signal transmission. This includes preparing cables, aligning fibers, and utilizing specialized equipment to achieve low-loss connections.
  • Installation and Maintenance: Conduct fiber splicing of excessive fiber in the Telecommunication Rooms. Perform maintenance and repair work on existing cables to prevent outages and maintain service quality.
  • Testing and Troubleshooting: Use test equipment like OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer), power meters, and light sources to diagnose and identify issues within the fiber network. Troubleshoot faults, assess signal loss, and verify that spliced fibers meet performance standards.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of splicing activities, cable routes, fiber assignments, test results, and completed work. Update schematics, diagrams, and as-built documentation as required.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, engineers, field crews, and other technicians to coordinate installations, repairs, and upgrades. Communicate effectively to ensure project milestones are met on time and within budget.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of fiber optic theory, cable construction, and splicing techniques. Ability to operate and maintain a variety of specialized tools and test equipment, such as a ribbon splicer.
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional precision when handling delicate fibers, ensuring minimal signal loss and high-quality splices.
  • Problem-Solving: Analytical thinking and resourcefulness in diagnosing and resolving technical issues in the field under tight deadlines.
  • Physical Stamina: Capability to work in challenging environments, including confined spaces, heights, and adverse weather conditions. Lifting, bending, and manual dexterity are often required.
  • Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with team members and document work activities accurately.
