Overview

We are seeking a full-time Senior Database Administrator in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for managing and optimizing a diverse set of big data technologies critical to the organization, including HDFS, Kafka, Kubernetes, Elasticsearch, and NoSQL platforms. Your expertise will ensure these systems are highly available, scalable, and performance-tuned to support real-time and large-scale applications in Garmin's manufacturing environments. In addition to your big data experience, you will also support and maintain enterprise-grade SQL Server environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and security. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot complex issues, implement automation, and contribute to the scalability and reliability of these systems.

Essential Functions
  • Analyze existing database systems and recommend improvements
  • Work with IT Manager to establish database security structures, Sox compliance
  • Create/maintain database access systems including tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, and triggers
  • Administer database replication between servers, across Local Area Network and Wide Area Network
  • Tune and optimize database objects
  • Provide 24x7 on call support
  • Provide technical input to solution development plans and concept documents
  • Demonstrate understanding of business impacts of issues and how they relate to IT owned solutions
  • Communicate effectively in written and verbal form in a cross-functional setting with business partners
  • Share knowledge and actively mentor less experienced IT Administrators (Administrator 1 & 2)
  • Perform/plan major version upgrades
  • Design/implement effective monitoring of enterprise systems
  • Tune systems using experience and deep knowledge of area
  • Foresee risks and communicate/mitigate those before problems arise
  • Document technical designs and procedures for team library
  • Plan/manage technical projects involving other teams
  • Communicate technology effectively to non-technical associates and management
  • Recognize/understand technology impacts within the business
  • Contribute to technical research on new technologies, processes or procedures with a desire to continuously learn new technologies
  • Participate in project definition activities including estimation of delivery

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or another related field AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Hands-on experience managing and optimizing big data technologies to support a broad range of enterprise solutions, including HDFS for distributed storage, Kubernetes for container orchestration, Kafka for real-time data streaming, Elasticsearch for scalable search and analytics, and SQL Server as a core relational database platform.
  • Proven experience in administering, tuning, and supporting NoSQL database and relational database technologies, with a focus on ensuring high availability, data integrity, and performance at scale with systems such as Cassandra, Redis, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or similar platforms in on-premises or cloud-based environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement new technologies effectively
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in a small team setting
  • Consistently demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work documentation and organization
