Job DescriptionTeam missionOracle Health & AI is building a cloud-native knowledge platform that powers healthcare understanding at scale. The platform includes:
- A knowledge graph modeling healthcare ontologies and terminologies (e.g., SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, etc...)
- A vector search store for semantic retrieval
- A federated component enabling AI agent teams to bring their own data into the platform securely
- Curation tools for clinical terminology experts to edit and add relationships, enriching the core graph
Role overviewWe're seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead the design, delivery, and operation platform components outside the core data layer (owned by an adjacent team). You will set the technical vision, grow and coach a high-performing team of ~15 ICs (scaling to include managers over time), and partner closely with AI agent teams, terminology experts, and product application teams across a 6,000-person organization.
What you will do - Own architecture and execution for knowledge graph services, vector search, federation, APIs, pipelines, and curation tooling
- Define and deliver graph capabilities (RDF modeling, versioning, lineage, change management, SPARQL/query patterns, mappings across terminologies)
- Build vector search for hybrid retrieval (symbolic + semantic), optimizing relevance, latency, and cost
- Provide secure, scalable federation patterns so AI agent teams can register datasets, define contracts/schemas, and query across boundaries
- Deliver human-in-the-loop curation workflows for terminology experts, including review, auditability, rollback, and publication pipelines
- Establish strong engineering practices: roadmaps, design reviews, CI/CD, testing, SLOs/observability, incident management, cost stewardship, and threat modeling
- Lead day-to-day operations with an on-call rotation (manager/tech-lead escalation roughly every 6 weeks), ensuring reliability and continuous improvement
- Collaborate across product, clinical terminology, AI agent, and application teams to align strategy and deliver business impact
- Recruit, mentor, and develop senior ICs and future managers; foster a culture of clarity, ownership, and collaboration
About you - User-obsessed and pragmatic-work backward from AI agent developer and clinician needs
- Systems thinker-balance correctness of clinical knowledge with performance, availability, and cost
- Strong communicator-comfortable with executives, clinicians, and engineers
- Hands-on leader-able to dive deep into architecture, data modeling, and reliability while scaling teams and processes
- Comfortable with ambiguity and greenfield problem spaces
Minimum qualifications (must-haves) - BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience
- 10+ years building and operating cloud services; 7+ years leading engineering teams with direct management of senior ICs (and ideally managers)
- Proven success building and scaling platform products (multi-tenant services, APIs, SDKs, self-service workflows)
- Strong foundation in distributed systems, data modeling, storage, and service APIs
- Demonstrated leadership in instituting robust engineering practices (CI/CD, testing, observability, incident management, security reviews)
Preferred qualifications (nice-to-haves) - Experience with graph technologies and standards (RDF, SPARQL; OWL or labeled property graphs a plus)
- Experience with vector search, embeddings, and hybrid retrieval patterns
- Familiarity with healthcare terminologies/ontologies (e.g., SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, ICD) and content curation workflows
- Background in federated data architectures, access controls, and multi-tenant isolation
- Experience supporting AI/RAG scenarios and evaluation frameworks
- Strong grasp of Java-based back-end development; comfort working across the stack
Success measures - Reliable, performant graph and vector services with defined SLOs
- Secure, scalable federation adopted by AI agent teams
- Efficient, auditable curation workflows with measurable content-quality improvements
- Clear cost/performance gains over time
- Healthy team culture, hiring velocity, and leadership growth
ResponsibilitiesAs a director of the software engineering division, you will apply your extensive knowledge of software architecture to manage software development tasks associated with developing, debugging or designing software applications, operating systems and databases according to provided design specifications. Build enhancements within an existing software architecture and envision future improvements to the architecture.
