Application Due September 28, 2025 - IPUMS makes the world's largest collection of population and health survey data freely accessible online. Hundreds of thousands of researchers worldwide use these data, and you can contribute to developing and enhancing this public good.
We seek a temporary associate data analyst interested in U.S. census data and geographic information systems (GIS) to join our diverse team of research and information technology professionals. We are looking for a technically-minded person who enjoys working with data and has the ability to learn new skills and knowledge quickly. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and motivated by task completion, knows when to ask questions, has strong organization skills, and is eager to develop technical skills in geographic census data processing and IPUMS data.
The current opening is for work on the National Historical Geographic Information System (IPUMS NHGIS - nhgis.org). NHGIS provides summary tables and time series of population, housing, agriculture, and economic data, along with GIS-compatible boundary files, for years from 1790 through the present and for all levels of U.S. census geography. The primary responsibility for this position is to contribute to the development and documentation of geographic census data for NHGIS. The work may also involve contributions to IPUMS user support and outreach, and technical support for other projects at IPUMS.
This position is a one-year appointment with the possibility of continuation pending available funding and satisfactory work performance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
You will be involved in all stages of the development, documentation, and dissemination of IPUMS NHGIS data.
Work Location : This position is eligible for hybrid (at least 2 days a week in the office) or fully onsite work arrangements. ISRDI is located in Willey Hall at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- 45% GIS data development and documentation . Support a variety of projects to develop and improve GIS data, including the digitization of 1980 and 1970 census block boundaries. Assemble and process input data. Validate and organize completed files for publication. Develop scripts to improve workflows. Provide guidance to editing assistants. Make corrections in published data. Author and edit text describing data products and workflows for both internal and external audiences.
- 45% Metadata development for data tables. Process metadata for new NHGIS datasets, identifying categories, classifications, and topics for added tables. Define and extend time series to include newly added data.
- 10% Web documentation. Prepare new documentation for the NHGIS website describing census geography concepts.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications :
- A bachelor's degree or a combination of related education and work experience equal to 4 years
- Experience and/or coursework using GIS and spatial data
- Experience and/or coursework in both R and Python programming
- Experience with one of the IPUMS databases or other large-scale census or survey datasets
- Excellent data manipulation skills and ability to learn new information technology
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision and to collaborate with others
- Attentive to detail and committed to accuracy
