Job Details

Electrical Engineer transmission protection Power Systems
Location: Ramona, CA
Long term project
Rate: $30/hr to $35/hr W2

Lead the development of protection and relay coordination studies to optimize system performance.
Design and develop relay settings using advanced tools, considering fault current calculations and load flow studies.
Analyze protection schemes and time-current curves to ensure effective system coordination.
Provide expert recommendations on protection strategies aligned with industry standards.
Review protection schematic drawings for accuracy against standards
Short circuit studies using CAPE (APA) or CYME
Calculations of setting parameters for microprocessors and electromechanical protective relays
Prepare settings in the relay manufacturers software.
Prepare logic diagrams of protection schemes.
Carry out peer reviews to check adherence to standards, philosophy, application guidance, and accuracy of calculations.
Perform coordination studies and make corrections to issues discovered.
Provide protection requirements for protection scheme designs
Provide support to the Test Technicians and Operators.
Specify and configure relay settings, reclosers, fuses, and trip savers for proper system design.
Conduct fault analysis, DER integration studies, and automation scheme evaluations.
Review relay operations and system disturbances, offering actionable resolutions.
Perform system modeling activities and quality assessments to ensure protection device coordination.

Required Skills/Attributes
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
5 years of experience and demonstrated success working in protection engineering.
Accredited degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline.
SYSTEMS & SKILLS
Solid understanding of protection schemes, fault analysis, and relay coordination.
Expertise in power system analysis software, including CYME, and CAPE (APA).
Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive space

Desired Skills/Attributes

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Professional Engineer (PE) license
Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Power Systems
6+ years of experience in transmission protection engineering
Technical expertise in at least one area of the utility industry as demonstrated by previous project experience or peer-reviewed publications, involvement in technical societies, and/or patents

SYSTEMS & SKILLS
Experience with CAPE macro development
Experience with CYME scripting
Knowledge of communication protocols (e.g., DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850) and SCADA systems.
Experience with automation of sub-transmission substations, protective relay upgrades in transformer banks, transmission and distribution lines, and protective fuse and auto-recloser setting calculations in distribution lines.
