JOB DESCRIPTION

Apex Systems is seeking a Senior Lead Consultant to drive the design and implementation of cutting-edge AI and optimization solutions for complex industrial systems. This role is ideal for professionals with deep expertise in mathematical modeling, simulation, and algorithmic decision-making. You'll lead client engagements, design scalable solutions using tools such as MIP solvers (i.e. Gurobi) and deep reinforcement learning and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver high-impact results. The ideal candidate will lead both the design and implementation phases-developing scalable and optimized AI solutions, defining architectural standards, and guiding the deployment of scalable, secure, and production-ready applications. Responsibilities include mentoring junior engineers, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and establishing best practices for experimentation, testing, and optimization of AI systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead AI/optimization projects from concept to deployment, working directly with client stakeholders and technical teams.
• Design and implement discrete and continuous simulations to model complex systems such as manufacturing lines, chemical processes, or logistics networks.
• Develop custom optimization algorithms, including Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) and metaheuristic approaches, tailored to client constraints and objectives.
• Apply Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) and other autonomous agent-based methods to real-world decision-making problems.
• Evaluate and compare solution techniques using appropriate performance metrics (e.g., solution quality, run-time efficiency).
• Mentor junior consultants and contribute to capability development across the AI practice.
• Present results and strategic recommendations to both technical and executive audiences.
• Manage and oversee projects, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget and quality standards.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful project execution and stakeholder satisfaction.
• Demonstrate strong technical knowledge and implementation skills. Stay current on relevant technology trends and practices. Build trust and respect among internal and external stakeholders and demonstrate collaborative teamwork.
• Produce high-quality deliverables, meet project deadlines, and take responsibility for engagement success. Demonstrate a passion for quality and process improvement.
• Demonstrate professional-level consulting skills and communication/presentation skills.

• Perform assessments of clients environments and design robust solutions and roadmaps.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Master's or Ph.D. in Mathematics, Operations Research, Chemical/Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 7+ years of experience solving complex optimization or simulation problems in industry or consulting.
• Strong background in mathematical modeling, simulation (discrete event or continuous-time), and operations research.
• Hands-on experience with optimization tools such as Gurobi, CPLEX, or open-source solvers.
• Proficiency in Python or Julia, with familiarity using ML/AI frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Ray RLlib).
• Experience developing and tuning heuristic or metaheuristic algorithms (genetic algorithms, tabu search).
• Working knowledge of deep reinforcement learning concepts and libraries.
• Strong consulting presence-capable of leading technical discussions, stakeholder alignment, and solution presentations.
• Preferred:
• Experience in high-impact industries like manufacturing, chemicals, supply chain, or energy.
• Exposure to digital twin or autonomous control system development nice to have.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform) and MLOps best practices.
