Job Description:

The Secretary of State s Information Services division is seeking a Digital Content Accessibility Specialist to evaluate two browser-based applications for compliance with WCAG 2.1 and Section 508 standards. This evaluation must align with the State of Maine s Digital Accessibility Policy.

The two applications include:

  • A vendor-provided solution for CEC
  • An in-house developed, modernized BMV application

This position will be responsible for:

  • Conducting accessibility testing according to state and federal guidelines
  • Identifying compliance issues
  • Proposing solutions
  • Creating final accessibility compliance reports for each application

One of the applications has already undergone an initial assessment, which yielded several findings. Given the upcoming go-live timelines, the Department of the Secretary of State requires this position to collaborate with developers and agency staff to ensure both applications fully meet WCAG 2.1 and Section 508 accessibility standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience in accessibility testing for browser-based web applications
  • Proven success in documenting findings and delivering digital presentations to communicate accessibility issues
  • Ability to:
    • Anticipate, identify, track, and resolve issues and risks impacting personal and team work
    • Develop contingency plans as needed
    • Research and provide expert guidance on accessibility-related problems
    • Understand business requirements supported by testing efforts
    • Participate in system testing or product testing as required
    • Schedule and conduct structured walkthroughs or inspections to resolve issues
    • Stay current on industry developments and incorporate new processes where appropriate
