Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Michigan three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

The Advanced High Voltage Battery Pack Architectures team at General Motors is a rapidly developing technology organization. We are creating innovative battery systems that provide industry-leading performance for GM's future electric vehicles. In this fast-moving environment the team is critical to providing commercially viable solutions to support GM's vision of Zero Emissions, Zero Crashes, and Zero Congestion.

As a key innovator in the battery space, you will be a key technical leader in the Advanced Battery Pack development team, providing pack level technical guidance to the Advanced Propulsion and New Products organizations, and ideating, initiating and executing related technology development projects. This role will have significant leadership responsibilities within the team and will also serve as one of the primary technical conduits between the team and executive leadership.

What You'll Do

  • Provide pack level technical leadership to the Advanced architectures team & technical consultation to the broader Advanced propulsion sub-system and New Products teams
  • Champion innovation and ideation related initiatives focused on developing proposals for next generation technologies and related ATW (Advanced Technology Work) support projects
  • Lead or support Battery pack or sub-system level ATW project execution
  • Interface with pack related execution teams to evolve related BoM/BoD/Auros best practice documents relative to future technology implementation
  • Assemble business case material to demonstrate anticipated functional and commercial viability of projects and technologies in the ATW space
  • Provide technical input toward battery pack and sub-system level roadmap development
  • Continuously benchmark automotive and other industries to identify and qualify innovative technologies
  • Support the competitive benchmarking team by leading and delivering benchmarking design reviews for competitive pack and related sub-system evaluations
  • Serve as a primary technical conduit between the team and executive leadership
  • Support and advocate for virtual development capability working toward an "all virtual" future
  • Interface with Analysis Engineers, product release teams, Technical Specialists, and suppliers to develop optimal design solutions that meet requirements
  • Provide consultation support toward PRTS resolution
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to other team members including those within the architectures team as well as those in related functional teams under the advanced propulsion organization

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 10 years of Engineering experience
  • Track-record of successfully ideating, initiating, and leading automotive battery pack innovation projects starting from coarse or vague requirements
  • Technical expertise across many major battery pack sub-systems and components including cell chemistry and selection, cell integration, sensing, bussing, structures, power electronics, BMS, cooling, thermal runaway mitigation, and vehicle integration.
  • Demonstrated ability to ideate, formulate and execute winning technical strategies and innovations
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex topics to enable leaders to make informed decisions
  • HW Subject Matter Expert to support software, calibration, and integration related team interfaces.
  • Demonstrated ability to create robust and executable product development processes and templates
  • Evidence of mentoring and developing others into technical experts
  • Evidence of data-based decision making driven by first principles
