Position Summary
We are seeking a Senior Protection & Relay Engineer with 10+ years of experience in transmission and distribution to support large-scale capital projects. The role requires deep technical knowledge in relay settings, substation protection, and system studies, ensuring compliance with WECC, NERC, and IEEE standards.
Key Responsibilities
Perform system modeling, short circuit studies, and relay coordination using CAPE, ASPEN, and other tools.
Develop and peer-review protective relay settings (12kV 765kV).
Issue and commission substation relay and auto-recloser settings (GE, SEL, ABB, Electromechanical).
Review one-line, logic, and elementary diagrams; collaborate with substation, project, and field engineers.
Provide QA support on relay files, calculations, and logic; ensure compliance with NERC PRC standards.
Train and mentor engineers, support test technicians during commissioning, and review returned relay settings.
What You ll Work On
Transmission and sub-transmission substation expansion and automation.
Relay protection upgrades for transformer banks, capacitor banks, reactor banks, and T&D lines.
Developing protective relaying schemes to enhance reliability of the SCE grid.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor s in Electrical Engineering or related field.
10+ years in protection, substation, and/or distribution engineering.
Proven expertise in relay settings, short circuit studies, and step distance/pilot protection schemes.
Proficiency in GE EnerVista UR Setup, SEL AcSELerator, CAPE, ASPEN, CYME.
Strong knowledge of system one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, digital logic design.
Familiarity with NERC PRC compliance requirements.
Desired Skills
Experience programming logic diagrams and supporting relay in-service testing.
Background in substation automation and protective relay upgrades.
Big 4 consulting experience (3+ years preferred).
Strong project planning, decision-making, and communication skills.
Stable work history with large enterprise organizations.
