Software Guidance & Assistance, Inc. (SGA) is searching for an AWS Cloud Database Engineer / Data Engineer for a contract assignment with one of our premier Financial Services clients located in Midtown, NYC. This role operates on a hybrid schedule (2 days onsite / 3 days remote).
Responsibilities
The AWS Cloud Database Engineer will design, build, and optimize modern, cloud-native data solutions supporting enterprise-scale data workloads. This individual will work closely with data engineers, software engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable data pipelines and database environments within AWS.

Responsibilities
The AWS Cloud Database Engineer will design, build, and optimize modern, cloud-native data solutions supporting enterprise-scale data workloads. This individual will work closely with data engineers, software engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable data pipelines and database environments within AWS.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and support large-scale data pipelines (ETL/ELT) using AWS native services such as Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, EMR, and Athena.
- Architect and manage data lake and data warehouse structures leveraging S3, Redshift (optional), Athena, and Lake Formation.
- Administer and optimize Aurora MySQL and AWS RDS databases including performance tuning, backup/restore, replication, monitoring, and user management.
- Implement data quality, cataloging, lineage, and governance processes using Glue Data Catalog, Lake Formation, CloudWatch, and related services.
- Develop automation for database operations, monitoring, and deployments using AWS CLI, Python, and Infrastructure-as-Code tools.
- Build CI/CD pipelines and contribute to AWS-based data platform development and deployment standards.
- Collaborate with data architects and engineering teams to define data models, ingestion patterns, and best practices for scalable data platforms.
- Participate in the full SDLC including requirements gathering, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.
- Assist with after-hours code deployments and system changes on a rotational basis.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts around reliability, performance, and automation within AWS data ecosystems.
- Uphold data security, compliance, and cloud governance standards as part of MIO's enterprise cloud strategy.
- 5+ years of hands-on Data Engineering experience building and supporting data platforms in AWS Cloud.
- Strong experience designing and managing cloud-native data lake/warehouse architectures (S3, Redshift, Athena, Lake Formation).
- Hands-on expertise in building ETL/ELT pipelines using AWS Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, EMR, PySpark, and related tools.
- Strong Aurora MySQL and/or RDS/MySQL database engineering experience, including performance tuning, schema design, maintenance, and replication.
- Strong ability to write and optimize SQL for complex transformations and performance.
- Proficiency in Python and PySpark for data processing and transformation.
- Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience implementing data governance, lineage, and cataloging using AWS-native tools.
- Strong understanding of AWS Cloud, security, monitoring, and automation best practices.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment with hybrid onsite expectations (2 days per week).
- Familiarity with SageMaker or machine learning data pipelines.
- AWS certifications (Data Analytics Specialty, Solutions Architect, or equivalent).
- Experience building operational dashboards, alarms, and metrics in CloudWatch.
- Financial services industry experience.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
