A fundamental part of our strategy is having desirable and powerful devices that enable the experiences people want and elicit their excitement. Creating these devices involves a close partnership between hardware and software engineers, designers, and manufacturing. We are currently building the next generation and Surface needs you!

As a SW( software)/FW (firmware) Engineer II of the Microsoft's Surface Power Team, you will drive improved power consumption and performance on Surface devices. You'll design and execute comprehensive validation plans, analyze telemetry and real-world usage data, and develop sophisticated automation frameworks to enhance the speed and reliability of validation processes. Your technical expertise will be vital in identifying root causes of system-level issues, collaborating with cross-functional teams to devise solutions, and driving continual improvement. Responsibilities:

  • Automation development : Develop tools and web applications in Python and C# to increase efficiency in test execution and data analysis, harnessing the power of AI.
  • Analyzing Power Across Systems: Examining how power consumption across different components (hardware and software) contributes to overall power usage work with tools and techniques to measure power draw during various workloads, such as browsing, gaming, or video playback.
  • Collaborating: Work with various teams within the company including hardware (HW), software (SW), platform, thermal, and application teams
  • Debugging: Debugging software and hardware issues in a lab environment is a critical skill. You'll need to identify and troubleshoot power-related problems by analyzing logs, using debugging tools, and working closely with engineers from different domains.
  • Adapt to a Fast-Paced Environment: Power-related issues can arise unexpectedly. Being able to adjust quickly and proactively is essential.
  • Developing Power Test Plans: Create test plans for power characterization is crucial. These plans outline how you'll measure power consumption under different scenarios. Battery life workloads (e.g., light usage, heavy multitasking) should be considered.
  • Analyze Data and Trends: Identifying patterns and trends related to power consumption through Telemetry.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • B asic understanding of OS fundamentals, system level debug, System on Chip, firmware,and Device Drivers.
  • 2+ years of experience working with Windows operating systems, command shell, and PowerShell.
  • 2+ years of experience working in a computer lab environment with automation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years e xperience with power and/or performance benchmarking and analysis.
  • 1+ years e xperience working with Azure.
  • 1+ years e xperience developing web applications.
  • 1+ years e xperience developing and incorporating AI into applications.
Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
