Job Title: Database Administrator 5 (Sybase)

Location: Lansing, MI Hybrid (2 days onsite per week, onsite from day 1)

Duration: 1 Year (with possible extension)

Position Overview:

We are seeking a skilled Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team on a long-term contract basis. The selected candidate will support both Sybase ASE 15.7 and SQL Server environments, contributing to ongoing modernization efforts to migrate from Sybase to SQL Server over the next three years.

This position offers the opportunity to become a full-time state employee in the future, though remaining as a contractor is also acceptable. The ideal candidate will have strong troubleshooting abilities, experience working within formal change control environments, and a proactive approach to database management and support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support, maintain, and troubleshoot Sybase ASE 15.7 databases running on Solaris (Unix) X86 environments.
  • Develop, monitor, and maintain Unix CRON jobs and perform command-line operations.
  • Assist with scheduled weekly data fixes (typically Thursdays and Fridays).
  • Support SQL Server environments hosted both on-premises and in Azure, across development, test, and production.
  • Collaborate on projects involving SQL Server upgrades, clustering, and disaster recovery implementations.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and provide after-hours assistance during system implementations as needed.
  • Contribute to the migration project transitioning from Sybase to SQL Server, including data conversion, testing, and optimization.
  • Adhere to established change control processes, documentation standards, and security policies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience as a Database Administrator in formal change control environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with Sybase ASE 15.7 administration in a Unix/Solaris environment.
  • Ability to create and manage Unix shell scripts and CRON jobs.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server (2016 and later) on Windows Server.
  • Understanding of database backup, recovery, and performance tuning.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with SQL Server clusters and Disaster Recovery (DR) configurations.
  • Exposure to Azure SQL Database or hybrid cloud database environments.
  • Experience supporting or participating in database migration projects (Sybase SQL Server strongly preferred).
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, etc.) is a plus.
