About the Job

The Sr. Process Manager will work with WM's Automation Group to help lead automation activities for all lines of businesses within the company and ensure the automation/controls engineering activities meet the company's objectives. They will be responsible for managing automation systems and perform control system troubleshooting, process modifications, system designs, specifications, and commissioning. This person will be the local liaison between the Automation Group and the local contacts, being the first point of contact for any automation issues that arise.

The role includes developing and improving new and existing equipment used in landfills, wastewater treatment plants, bio-gas extraction systems, renewable energy plants, recycling technology, and organics processing. Individuals must be able to work in a fast past environment and resolve issues on their own. Industrial control wiring, industrial equipment, PLC/HMI programming, and process design knowledge is necessary. Position will require traveling to the different Landfill Sites within the WPA/WV area.

What You'll be Doing

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.


  • This position will be responsible to provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) level day-to-day support of all automated and electro-mechanical process control systems used in landfills, wastewater, bio-gas extraction, renewable energy, recycling technology, and organics processing.

  • Expected results from this position would include hands-on support of automated systems, troubleshooting of automated process equipment and process systems, assisting in the coordination of contractors, execution of site change controls, aiding in the investigation of process deviations, and providing expertise for process evaluation and product improvements for better quality, yields while maintaining the highest level of safety.

  • This position will support the highly complex automated systems and equipment installed in new and existing facilities.

  • Must provide automation site support interface with operations personnel, compliance, information systems, engineering, and maintenance. Key to this is the thorough documentation of all data collected and stored in shared work environments.

  • Must exhibit strong customer communication skills and have technical knowledge of automated and electro-mechanical process control systems and equipment.

  • The position will be integral in providing process optimization expertise and implementation of corporate site automation standard procedures at the Market Area level.

  • Training of the local operators and managers on the proper operation of their respective equipment and SCADA system(s)



What does it take to be a Landfill Processing Manager

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

Demonstrated Performance


  • Proficient in Rockwell Studio 5000, RSLogix 500, FactoryTalk ME/SE, Plant PAx, with ability to interpret, modify, and write new code for process control.

  • Proficient in PanelView, C-more, Maple systems and other HMI development tools.

  • Understand communication protocols: Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, HART, ControlNet, and DeviceNet

  • Understand process engineering & design.

  • Interpret P&ID diagrams across various processes.

  • Ability to read, understand & interpret electrical, pneumatic & hydraulic schematics.

  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities

  • Knowledge of AC/DC control circuitry

  • Experience with VFD's and motor controls

  • Knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC)

  • Knowledge of NFPA Codes

  • Proficient in MS Office 365 products

  • Must possess ability to work independently, unsupervised within a specified geographic location.

  • ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) a plus



Education & Experience


  • 4+ years of experience with industrial electrical controls, automation, control systems, instrumentation, and process design



Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements


  • ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) or Certified Automation Professional (CAP) preferred, but not required.



Work Environment

  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.)

  • Working in or around low to medium voltage electrical panels

  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects up to 100 pounds occasionally.

  • Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.)

  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements.

  • Normal setting for this job is: 50% indoors / 50% outdoors.

  • This position will require the ability to travel to multiple sites on an as needed basis.
