Who We Are

Nuro exists to better everyday life through robotics. Founded in 2016, Nuro has spent eight years developing autonomous driving (AD) technology and commercializing AD applications. The Nuro Driver is our world-class autonomous driving system that combines AD hardware with our generalized AI-first self-driving software. Built to learn and improve through data, the Nuro Driver is one of the few driverless autonomous technologies on public roads today.

Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Fidelity, Bailie Gifford, T. Rowe Price, Google, and other leading investors. We've partnered with some of the world's most respected brands including Uber, FedEx, Domino's, Walmart, Kroger, and 7-Eleven.

About the Role

As a Senior Systems Engineer in Assisted Autonomy, you will work closely with the autonomy software, remote assistance, and operations teams to show that the combination of Autonomy and Remote Assistance achieves our system safety goals. You will be responsible for ensuring that safety risks related to the behavior and capabilities of Autonomy and Remote Assistance in the pursuit of mission success are identified and managed by the system and Operations. You will work closely with engineers, product managers, and operations to facilitate system design, drive validation efforts, and communicate risks.

About the Work
  • Manage system goals, capabilities, and safety claims by understanding the capabilities of Autonomy and Remote Assistance and interfacing with cross-functional leads.
  • Support the safety case by identifying, documenting, and communicating Autonomy safety claims and decomposed system requirements.
  • Apply one or more analytical techniques for risk identification such as Hazards and Risk Analysis (HARA) and STPA.
  • Write, manage, and communicate behavioral requirements for the system, applicable subsystems, and operations; manage the assignment of behavioral competency responsibilities across the system and operations.
  • Design experiments and perform trade studies to assess adequacy and cost of competing technical solutions for substantiating safety claims, including but not limited to autonomy architecture, mitigations, and end-to-end testing; make strategic recommendations based on the results.
  • Support the design and architecture by infrastructure and autonomy engineers of the remote assistance system, factoring in constraints from infrastructure, autonomy, operator performance as well as constraints from validation/test ability (e.g. simulation).
  • Drive the validation strategy for remote assistance, delegating to software engineering, hardware engineering, and operations where appropriate.
  • Communicate design gaps and residual risks effectively to a cross-functional product development team.

About You
  • Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, or Doctoral Degree in Computer Science, Math, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Physics, or related field.
  • Deep understanding of how robotic systems work and ability to leverage this knowledge to build requirements and tests for autonomous vehicles.
  • Experience working in a safety-critical industry (e.g. robotics, automotive, aviation/aerospace, medical devices) for a complex system, specifically when there is a human in the loop.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to apply systems engineering concepts of requirements, verification, and validation to systems that involve humans.
  • Hands-on experience with STPA and ISO 21448.
  • Strong Python programming and algorithmic problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with simulation as applied to verification and validation.
  • Highly collaborative in nature with strong abilities to think and communicate analytically and effectively.
  • Strong communication skills - both verbal and written. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build good working relationships.
  • Self starter and fast learner - you should be passionate about picking up new skills and approaching unstructured problems from first principles.
  • Must be self-motivated to prioritize and manage workload and meet critical project deadlines.
  • 6+ years of technical work experience in a relevant area, of which 3+ years should be in robotics SW.

Nice to have
  • Experience writing safety claims and system requirements for SAE L2/L3/L4 systems to operate safely.
  • Familiarity with ISO 8800.
  • Experience with simulation of autonomous vehicles.
