Purpose

The Actuarial Data Scientist, Manager will lead AAIS's predictive modeling and advanced analytics efforts for insurance pricing with direct oversight of a team of data scientists. This role is responsible for strategic leadership of usage with Akur8 (3rd party vendor) and analyzing complex datasets to inform high-impact business decisions. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in insurance pricing, predictive modeling, and team management to deliver actionable insights and scalable solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Leverage data-driven insights to guide strategic planning and operational improvements.
  • Manage and mentor a team of data scientists and actuarial analytic professionals, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as the enterprise-wide Product Owner for Akur8, ensuring optimal usage and alignment with business goals.
  • Develop and maintain predictive modeling policies, procedures, and governance frameworks.
  • Drive the creation of Akur8-ready datasets from AAIS databases and ensure data integrity and readiness for modeling.
  • Lead cross-functional project teams as a Project Sponsor, ensuring alignment, communication, and delivery of key milestones.
  • Collaborate with actuarial, product, and regulatory teams to develop filing materials and support state filings for Akur8 use-cases.
  • Translate complex data into clear, actionable business recommendations for senior leadership.
  • Champion the use of advanced analytics tools and methodologies to support pricing and underwriting decisions.
  • Represent AAIS in industry forums and contribute to thought leadership in predictive modeling and pricing strategy.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or requested.

Manage a Team
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team to deliver high performance and support individual growth.
  • Set clear goals and expectations, monitor progress, and provide regular feedback.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, ensure alignment with department objectives, and remove barriers to performance.
  • Support resource planning, workload distribution, and prioritization of tasks.
  • Facilitate regular team meetings, one-on-one check-ins, and performance conversations.
  • Identify and address performance issues in a timely and constructive manner.
  • Partner with Human Resources on talent-related matters such as hiring, onboarding, development, employee relations, and performance management. Encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Represent the team's needs and perspectives in cross-functional discussions.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proven expertise in predictive modeling and working with insurance pricing strategies.
  • Experience working in property and casualty insurance industry.
  • Strong business acumen and strategic thinking, with a focus on delivering measurable outcomes.
  • Advanced proficiency in data analytics tools and programming languages (e.g., SAS, SQL, R, Python, Akur8).
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience in developing and visualizing data-driven insights for executive-level decision-making.
  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities, with experience developing high-performing teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across multiple channels and asynchronously in a remote-first working environment.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree with in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, or related field.
  • 7-10 years of insurance industry experience with a focus on actuarial analytics, predictive modeling, or pricing strategies.
  • Completion of CSPA, ACAS, or FCAS, a plus.
  • Strong technical skills in Excel; proficiency in VBA, SAS, SQL, R, Python, or other database management languages strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams and leading strategic initiatives.
  • Hands-on experience with Akur8 and other predictive modeling platforms strongly preferred.
  • Minimum travel is required for annual all-company gatherings or team design sessions (up to 5% of the time)

Salary Description

Starting at $125,000
