What is PCR?

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a laboratory method used to amplify specific DNA sequences. Developed in the 1980s, it allows scientists to generate millions of copies of a DNA segment from a small initial sample. This is achieved through cycles of heating and cooling that enable DNA denaturation, primer annealing, and extension by DNA polymerase enzymes.

Applications include:

  • DNA cloning

  • Pathogen detection

  • Genetic fingerprinting

  • Mutation analysis

What is qPCR?

qPCR (quantitative PCR), also known as real-time PCR, builds on traditional PCR by adding the ability to measure DNA amplification in real time. It uses fluorescent dyes or probes that emit signals proportional to the amount of DNA being amplified, allowing for quantification of the target DNA.

Key applications:

  • Gene expression analysis

  • Pathogen load quantification

  • SNP genotyping

  • DNA methylation studies
