Migration Engineer GitHub Enterprise to GitHub EMU
Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Migration Engineer to lead and support our transition from GitHub Enterprise (Classic) to GitHub EMU (Enterprise Managed Users). In this role, you will be responsible for planning, executing, and validating the migration process, ensuring minimal disruption and full continuity of development operations across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Migration Planning and Execution
Collaborate with engineering, security, and IT teams to plan and coordinate the migration timeline and milestones.
Key Migration of 1000+ users
Analyze the current GitHub Enterprise environment and prepare for EMU compatibility.
Execute repository, permission, team, and user migrations while maintaining data integrity and access controls.
Identity and Access Management
Integrate GitHub EMU with enterprise identity providers (e.g., Azure AD, Okta) using SAML/SCIM.
Ensure seamless SSO configuration and onboarding processes for managed users.
Automation and Tooling
Develop scripts and tools to automate migration tasks, reduce manual intervention, and validate data integrity.
Identify and mitigate any automation or CI/CD pipeline disruptions due to the migration.
Communication and Documentation
Provide clear documentation on migration procedures, support materials, and best practices.
Conduct knowledge transfer sessions and end-user training post-migration.
Act as a liaison with GitHub support and internal stakeholders throughout the migration lifecycle.
Monitoring and Support
Monitor system performance and resolve post-migration issues.
Provide ongoing support and optimization for the GitHub EMU environment.
Required Qualifications:
3+ years of experience with GitHub Enterprise administration and support.
Demonstrated experience with GitHub EMU or equivalent enterprise identity-integrated platforms.
Strong understanding of Git, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps workflows.
Proficient in scripting languages such as Bash, Python (Preferable), or PowerShell.
Familiarity with Okta SSO, SAML, and SCIM protocols.
Data Migration tool Exp (open source GitHub Importer)
Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work under pressure.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with large-scale user migrations or enterprise SaaS platform transitions.
Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
Prior experience working with GitHub s GraphQL and REST APIs.
Knowledge of compliance and governance practices in source code management.
