Position: Mechanical Engineer III
Location: Cupertino, California
Duration: Contract
Job ID: 170700

Job Overview:
As a member of the Battery Modeling team, the candidate will be responsible for thermal modeling for all products. The candidate will be fully integrated with the Product Design team from the earliest stages, analyzing and informing the design of cutting-edge products. Additionally, the candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide design guidance regarding the thermal impact of product features.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop state-of-the-art thermal and multiphysics finite element (FE) models of cell, pack, and BMS sub-systems.
  • Provide design and tradeoff guidance to Product Design teams through early-stage simulations, particularly for fast charging and high-power functions.
  • Generate models and capabilities to convert power maps into thermal outputs.
  • Perform advanced thermal/CFD simulations to evaluate and enhance understanding of boundary conditions at the cell, pack, and BMS subsystems around battery packs and systems.
  • Utilize best-in-class tools and solvers to generate necessary simulation models and results.
  • Collaborate with test and reliability labs to develop physical test methods and gather data for results validation.
  • Work with system teams to develop detailed sub-models for assembly-level simulations.
  • Develop optimized workflows and reusable templates for regularly required thermal simulations.
  • Establish and implement thermal modeling best practices.
  • Collaborate with CAE vendors to drive functionality improvements for the group's CAE needs.
  • Explore new analysis types and solutions, including topological optimization.
  • Extract Reduced Order Models (ROM) from CFD simulations to accelerate exploratory studies.

Qualifications:
  • PhD with 3+ years of industry experience.
  • Background in mechanical or electrical engineering with a strong foundation in CFD and thermal modeling.
  • Expert-level skills in Ansys Electronic Desktop and Icepak.
  • Familiarity with Ansys HFSS 3D Layout and SIWave.
  • Experience in transient thermal simulations of assemblies.
  • Familiarity with NX, Comsol, and Cadence.
  • Experience in electronics cooling.
  • Knowledge of multiphysics coupled modeling, integrating mechanical, thermal, and electrochemical behaviors.
  • Proficiency in Python or other scripting languages.
  • with no export compliance restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in Allegro and electronics layout design.
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion cells and battery packs.
  • Experience in defining and leading technical development roadmaps.
  • Experience in managing project teams.
