Job Description

Position Summary

Sound United's audio engineering team is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join our innovative and dynamic environment in our Owings Mills, MD facility. In this role, you will play a critical part in shaping the future of immersive audio technologies in developing world-class products for iconic brands such as Polk Audio, Definitive Technology, Denon, Marantz, Bowers & Wilkens, and Boston Acoustics. Immerse yourself in a passion for audio while collaborating globally to design and develop innovative electronic systems for portable speakers, sound bars, and home theater speaker products.

Essential Responsibilities:

Design, simulate, design layouts, and optimize complex analog/digital electrical systems for various consumer audio products using Altium Designer.

Develop innovative Class-D amplifier topologies, including power stage design and control loops (perform loop gain analysis). Develop, validate, and refine Class D amplifier circuits and related audio subsystems for consumer products such as active speakers, subwoofers, and receivers.

Verify and characterize hardware performance under real-world conditions using Audio Precision analyzers and other industry-standard test equipment.

Collaborate with mechanical, acoustic, firmware and DSP engineers to integrate hardware, firmware, and signal processing into cohesive system designs with shared system requirements and integration challenges.

Select components that meet performance, cost, and manufacturing requirements.

Define and execute comprehensive test plans, including frequency response, THD+N, power sweeps, dynamic range, and system-level performance across multiple product types.

Debug and resolve hardware performance issues, performing detailed root-cause analysis where necessary.

Document designs, test results, and specifications to support successful cross-team product development from concept through production using the company's stage-gate process.

Implement robust PCB layouts minimizing noise, crosstalk, ground bounce, and maximizing signal integrity for sensitive low level audio signals in the presence of high currents.

Interface with manufacturing partners, engineers, and travel overseas and domestically as and when necessary to monitor and debug issues.

Analyze information to make decisions and solve problems effectively.

Effectively communicate with supervisors, peers, and external stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Education (required): Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Audio Technology, Physics, or a related STEM field. If you have taken a different path to meet the qualifications, we look forward to hearing your story.

Education (preferred): Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Audio Technology, Physics, or a related STEM field.

Experience: 3-7 years of related industry experience or equivalent with a compelling story. Preferred: 4+ years of experience designing audio hardware for consumer electronics.

Professional Certifications: Certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Electrical Professional (CEP), or others relevant to the industry can demonstrate a candidate's commitment to professional development.

Experience with Altium, Audio Precision Analyzers, Electro Acoustic Test and Measurement, data loggers, temperature chambers, etc.

Software Development: knowledgeable about software architecture or coding for embedded systems and applications.

Experience with simulation tools such as SPICE (PSpice, LTSpice or MixedSim).

Strong knowledge of power amplifier design, DACs, microphones, TOSlink, USB-Audio and Bluetooth audio modules.

Proficiency in mixed-signal integration (analog + digital) for audio systems. Familiarity with designing low noise audio input stages including phono inputs and analog/digital microphones.

Experience designing power supply circuits for portable and high-power audio devices including battery management systems for portable electronics.

Familiarity with HDMI, CEC, Optical, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, analog interfaces, and digital audio interfaces (I S, SPDIF, USB).

Proficiency in developing and executing test plans to validate hardware performance.

Experience with EMI/EMC compliance debugging in consumer audio hardware.

Familiarity with loudspeaker system design, including crossover design and integration with amplifiers and receivers.

Salary Range:

The anticipated salary range for this position is $95,000 - $110,000 range plus benefits. Actual placement within the range is dependent on multiple factors, including but not limited to skills, education, and experience. This position also qualifies for up to 3.5% PSP bonus based on company, department, and individual performance.
