About the Role

Microsoft is seeking a knowledgeable and hands-on Level II Data Center Technician to support operations at our Northlake, IL facility. This role is ideal for professionals with experience in enterprise-grade data centers who are comfortable working with complex hardware systems, troubleshooting infrastructure issues, and supporting mission-critical cloud operations.
As a Level II Technician, you will be responsible for executing daily operational tasks, supporting hardware lifecycle management, and ensuring the reliability and performance of Microsoft's global cloud infrastructure. You'll work in a fast-paced, high-availability environment where precision, accountability, and technical expertise are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Hardware Lifecycle Management

  • Prepare, stage, and install server and network hardware including racks, switches, hard drives, memory modules, and power supplies.
  • Perform system startups and shutdowns according to detailed checklists, deployment guides, and safety protocols.
  • Conduct post-installation quality checks to verify grounding, cabling, labeling, and airflow compliance.

Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

  • Monitor systems for hardware failures, performance degradation, and environmental alerts.
  • Use diagnostic tools and logs to identify root causes of issues and perform break/fix repairs.
  • Replace faulty components and perform OS rebuilds, firmware updates, and memory upgrades as needed.

Decommissioning & Refresh

  • Safely decommission outdated or failed hardware following Microsoft's data sanitization and disposal protocols.
  • Support refresh cycles by imaging new systems, updating configurations, and validating readiness for deployment.

Operational Support

  • Respond to program error messages and system alerts, escalating complex issues to senior technicians or engineering teams.
  • Assist developers and systems analysts in testing and debugging new software deployments.
  • Operate spreadsheet and monitoring tools to manipulate data and generate performance reports.

Security & Compliance

  • Follow strict physical security protocols including access control, escort procedures, and audit readiness.
  • Ensure all work complies with Microsoft's internal standards and industry regulations such as ISO 27001, FedRAMP, and SOC 2.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $24.00/hr.
