Platform Engineer
Location: Remote
Duration: 1 year+ (high chances of extension)

This is a Platform Engineer role and candidate must be able to demonstrate ability to perform and support multiple platforms activities. Demonstrated experience in using VMware, Dell Hardware, Ubuntu, AWS Workspaces or other technologies from an architecture, engineering and content developer perspective is REQUIRED.

Holding the CompTIA Linux+ or equivalent is preferred. Any VMware or Linux certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical and infrastructure management for Platforms (Architecture, Engineering, Administration, Security Management) infrastructures including VMware, Dell Hardware, Ubuntu, AWS Workspaces, and other best-in-class products.
  • Design, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot client specific Platform environments.
  • Complete tasks in an efficient and timely manner with effective progress reporting and issue escalation.
  • Seek innovative ways to improve the process of delivering solutions to clients.
  • Serve as technical point of contact on client engagements.
  • Maintain the health, performance, and tuning of the Platforms and coordinate with department stakeholders when new technologies are implemented to ensure appropriate data ingestion.
  • Develop scripts and automation processes that perform tasks such as desired state security configuration, systems deployment and management, or application-level configuration.
  • Serve as a hands-on technical resource working directly with various internal teams that include staff from development, management, cloud services, and executive leadership to provide guidance and ensure solutions adhere to security policy and industry best practices.
  • Create and document procedures and work instructions for use by the SOC staff (Tier 2 through Tier 3) and internal teams.
  • Ability to work with provided security and application policies to design and implement network and security rules and configurations across various Platforms.
  • Manage, develop, and tune integration with ServiceNow.
  • Monitor the impact of deploying new content on the health and performance of the Platforms.
  • Collaborate with application owners to define and establish logging and policy standards to address various governance requirements.
  • Maintain enterprise Cyber Security Engineering requirements for Platforms including new and existing products.

Candidate Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience using either an Enterpriseand or cloud Platform technologies as an engineer and architect.
  • Ability to support and work across multiple customer and internal systems.
  • Must be able to pass a CJIS background check process and other background checks to comply with customers contracts.
  • Complete basic safety and security training to meet the customer requirements.
  • Ability to work non-business hours as required.

Qualifying Experience and Attributes

VMware

  • Experiences with Installation and Configuration: Setting up and configuring VMware vSphere environments, including ESXi hosts and vCenter Server.
  • Experiences with Virtual Machine Management: Creating, managing, and optimizing virtual machines (VMs) using vSphere.
  • Experiences with Resource Management: Allocating and optimizing compute, storage, and networking resources in vSphere environments.
  • Experiences with Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Monitoring performance metrics, identifying issues, and troubleshooting vSphere infrastructure.
  • Experiences with vSphere Security: Implementing security best practices for vSphere environments.
  • Experiences with Scripting and Automation Skills: Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for automating VMware tasks.

Ubuntu

  • Experiences with Command Line Proficiency: Comfortable navigating and performing tasks using the terminal (Bash shell).
  • Experiences with File System Navigation and Manipulation: Understanding directory structure, file permissions, and basic file operations.
  • Experiences with User and Group Management: Managing users, groups, and permissions.
  • Experiences with Package Management: Using APT (Advanced Package Tool) for package installation, updates, and removal.
  • Experiences with Installation and Configuration: Installing and setting up Ubuntu Server or Desktop editions.
  • Experiences with System Monitoring and Maintenance: Monitoring system performance, managing services, and performing routine maintenance tasks.
  • Experiences with Security Practices: Implementing security measures such as firewall configuration (e.g., using ufw), securing SSH access, and managing software updates (apt update, apt upgrade).
  • Experiences with Security Hardening: Implementing security best practices such as disabling unnecessary services, applying patches, and configuring firewall rules.
  • Experiences with Shell Scripting: Writing Bash scripts for automating tasks and system administration.
  • Experiences with Containerization with Docker: Creating and managing containers for applications.

Dell Hardware

  • Experiences with Understanding Server Components: Familiarity with server hardware components such as CPUs, memory (RAM), storage drives (HDDs/SSDs), RAID controllers, and networking interfaces.
  • Experiences with Server Configuration: Ability to configure BIOS settings, RAID configurations, and hardware monitoring.
  • Experiences with Installation and Configuration: Installing and configuring operating systems (e.g., Windows Server, Linux distributions) and virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware ESXi) on Dell servers.
  • Experiences with Dell Remote Access Controllers (iDRAC): Configuring and utilizing iDRAC for remote server management, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Experiences with RAID Configuration: Configuring RAID arrays (e.g., RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5) for data redundancy and performance.
  • Experiences with System Hardening: Implementing security best practices on Dell servers, including firmware updates, BIOS security settings, and access controls.
  • Experiences with Resource Monitoring: Using tools like Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) to monitor server health, performance metrics, and hardware status.
  • Experiences with Backup Solutions: Implementing backup strategies and solutions (e.g., Dell EMC Data Protection Suite) for server data protection and recovery.
  • Experiences with Hardware Diagnostics: Using built-in diagnostics tools and Dell diagnostic utilities to troubleshoot hardware issues.

AWS WorkSpaces

  • Experiences with AWS Services: Familiarity with AWS core services, including EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud), IAM (Identity and Access Management), VPC (Virtual Private Cloud), and AWS Directory Service.
  • Experiences with AWS Management Console: Proficiency in navigating the AWS Management Console for service provisioning and management.
  • Experiences with WorkSpaces Deployment: Deploying and configuring AWS WorkSpaces for users and groups.
  • Experiences with Bundles and Images: Creating custom WorkSpaces bundles and AMI (Amazon Machine Image) for specific user requirements.
  • Experiences with Workspace Lifecycle Management: Managing WorkSpaces instances, including provisioning, modification, and termination.
  • Experiences with Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Monitoring WorkSpaces performance metrics (CPU, memory, disk usage) and troubleshooting connectivity or performance issues.
  • Experiences with Software Installation: Installing and managing applications on AWS WorkSpaces using standard deployment methods (e.g., MSI packages, software repositories).
  • Experiences with Workspace Customization: Configuring user profiles, settings, and preferences for personalized user experiences.
  • Experiences with Snapshot Management: Taking and managing snapshots of WorkSpaces for backup and recovery purposes.
  • Ability to provide periodic Status Updates and Technical Presentations.
  • Experiences with Scripting and Automation Skills: Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for automating Platform tasks and processes.
  • Ability to interpret the information collected by packet capture tools (e.g. Wireshark, Ixia).
  • Knowledge of how to use network analysis tools to identify vulnerabilities.
  • Knowledge of Qualys Vulnerability Scanning tool, SentinelOne how to use network analysis tools to identify vulnerabilities.
  • Skill in performing packet-level analysis.
  • Knowledge of network protocols such as TCP/IP, Dynamic Host Configuration, Domain Name System (DNS), and directory services.
