Summary of Position
The Lead Infrastructure Engineer, in this hands-on position is responsible for leading the design, implementation, and maintenance of Linux-based infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on cloud migration and automation. This role requires extensive experience in transitioning on-premises systems to cloud-based architectures, ensuring high availability, security, and performance. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, problem solver, and effective communicator who can guide Newsday through complex infrastructure transformations.

Essential Duties & Functions Leadership & Cloud Migration
- Lead the migration of on-premises infrastructure to cloud-based solutions (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform).
- Develop and execute cloud adoption roadmaps, ensuring minimal downtime and security compliance.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across IT and development teams to align cloud strategies with business objectives.
- Define best practices for infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools.
- Provide technical leadership on DevOps strategies, including CI/CD pipeline optimization and container orchestration.
- re Linux System Administration & Automation
- Deep expertise in Linux operating systems (Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc.), including installation, configuration, and maintenance.
- Strong proficiency in scripting and automation (Bash, Python, Ansible, etc.) to streamline system administration tasks.
- Experience with system monitoring, log management, and proactive troubleshooting using tools like Solarwinds, Siem, Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK stack.
Virtualization & Containerization
- Extensive experience with VMware vSphere, ESXi hosts, vMotion, and DRS.
- Expertise in Docker and Kubernetes for container orchestration, ensuring scalability and high availability.
- Ability to design, implement, and maintain virtualized environments and container-based solutions.
Cloud Infrastructure & Security
- Strong understanding of AWS services (EC2, VPC, S3, IAM, RDS, Lambda) and cloud networking best practices.
- Implement and enforce cloud security best practices, including identity and access management (IAM), encryption, and compliance monitoring.
- Hands-on experience with hybrid cloud solutions and cloud-to-cloud migrations.
- Optimize cost efficiency in cloud environments by leveraging auto-scaling, reserved instances, and cost management tools.
Storage & Networking
- Expertise in Storage Area Network (SAN) and Fiber Channel technologies.
- Ability to configure and troubleshoot network infrastructure, including VLANs, firewalls, and load balancers.
- Strong knowledge of DNS, DHCP, VPNs, and network security policies.
Troubleshooting & Support
- Diagnose and resolve complex system issues in on-premises and cloud environments.
- Provide technical leadership during system outages and performance incidents.
- Work closely with development and security teams to ensure robust, scalable, and secure infrastructure.
- Provide on-call support as needed for production environments.
Essential Job Knowledge & Skills
- B.S. in Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent experience.
- 7+ years of experience in Linux system administration, with a at least 3 years focusing cloud migration and DevOps practices.
- Strong proficiency with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, ArgoCD, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
- Familiarity with RDBMS (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL) and NoSQL databases.
- Proficiency with more than one scripting language, e.g., PHP, Java, Perl, Python, YAML.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, Azure, and hybrid cloud integration is a plus.
- Strong understanding networking fundamentals, cybersecurity best practices and compliance standards.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to mentor junior team members.
- Experience provisioning, operating, and maintaining systems running on AWS including monitoring and management of their services.
- Use of source control systems (SVN/CSV)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to mentor junior team members.
- Ability to communicate effectively with business side clients to troubleshoot incidents or gather and translate functional specs.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-discipline team.
- Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule to include extended hours, weekends and holidays in order to support business needs.
Certifications (preferred but not required):
- RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer)
- VMware certifications (VCP).
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer
Physical Requirements
- Ability to carry/lift up to 30 lbs on occasion for hardware setup and maintenance.
- This position generally required to be on site 5 days a week.
Compensation
- The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $145,700, commensurate with experience.
