Position: Senior System Engineer With GKE

Location: Remote

Duration: 6+ Month

About the job

We are seeking a highly experienced and self-driven Senior System Engineer with a deep specialization in Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) to join our team for a 6-month remote contract. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in shaping our cloud infrastructure, driving automation, and guiding the modernization of our application landscape. You will collaborate closely with development and engineering teams to design, implement, and optimize scalable, production-ready solutions on Google Cloud Platform.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate multiple architectural designs and consolidate them into a single, scalable, and efficient production-ready deployment model.
  • Collaborate with software development teams to understand application requirements, deployment workflows, and operational needs.
  • Design and implement infrastructure automation using Terraform, targeting serverless and containerized services (GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud SQL).
  • Define and implement GitOps practices using FLUX CD, Helm charts, and YAML configurations for Kubernetes deployments.
  • Provide expertise in setting up and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Cloud Build, with potential migration to alternative tools in the future.
  • Guide the modernization of monolithic applications into cloud-native Spring Boot-based microservices (projected to scale to 1,000+ services in the future).
  • Support development teams to ensure smooth deployment and integration into GKE.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with on-prem engineering teams on Terraform provisioning and DevOps best practices.

Must-Haves

  • 7+ years of professional experience designing, configuring, implementing, and deploying GKE and Service Mesh in Google Cloud Platform.
  • Proficiency with Docker containerization and cloud-native services.
  • Hands-on experience in automated CI/CD hybrid environments (Jenkins, Flux CD, etc.).
  • Experience working in Linux/Google Cloud Platform hybrid environments with excellent proficiency with shell/bash scripting and YAML.
  • Adept understanding of middleware components and how to interact with Java-based APIs.
  • Ability to lead project work with minimal or no guidance.
  • Proficiency with Terraform for Google Cloud Platform.
  • Any Google Cloud Platform certification (ideally Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer or Cloud Architect).

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with Kubernetes deployments into a Java-based microservices environment.
  • Professional expertise with application architecture transformation from monolith to cloud-native architecture.
  • Some exposure to technical project management or cross-team coordination.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.
