Job Details

Tesla is seeking an accomplished Senior Engineering leader to usher in the next generation of innovation in manufacturing Tesla Powertrain products. This Leadership position will be responsible for all engineering operations within the Powertrain department at Tesla's Fremont factory. This individual will lead all engineering departments across Process, Quality, Controls, Equipment, and Test Engineering disciplines in a dynamic 24/7 manufacturing environment. Scope of ownership includes sustaining high volume battery pack manufacturing alongside development and launch of new, exciting Tesla products including Optimus humanoid robots and other innovations.

Responsibilities
  • Mentor and develop a high performing management team for each engineering discipline necessary for successful manufacturing across all Powertrain products including HV Battery Packs, Optimus humanoid robots, and others
  • Set clear goals and expectations in line with aggressive program timelines, ramp plans and cost objectives of the organization. Drive accountability across all levels of your organization with fairness and consistency in line with Tesla's policies
  • Develop accurate and reliable data systems for automated tracking of all metrics to drive overall equipment effectiveness. Optimize strategies for inputs to these metrics such as critical process parameter statistical monitoring, equipment downtime states, and quality management systems such as PFMEA, supplier quality, and root cause corrective actions
  • Guide the process, equipment and quality engineering teams on developing/improving control plans, PFMEA, DFM, mistake proofing and robust process & equipment controls to have highly capable processes
  • Gain a great understanding of the product design intent and specification limits, theory of operations of the product and manufacturing equipment to identify and mitigate product quality and process related risks. Strategize and execute production line capacity increase, efficiency improvements, cycle time and yield improvement projects and attack bottleneck processes to achieve aggressive ramp targets
  • Foster a culture of first principles - data driven problem solving. Leverage successful experience in high volume manufacturing to ensure product quality and personnel safety have effective controls and change control discipline through rigorous standardization
  • Execute ambitious Capex projects in line with Tesla's relentless pursuit for innovation. Drive cost reductions initiatives on reducing BOM, scrap, labor, consumables and other overhead costs
  • Reinforce cultural expectations around a rigorous quality management system to ensure all products shipped meet design, reliability, and safety requirements
  • Develop strong relationships with cross functional partners in Design, Manufacturing Engineering, NPI, Supply Chain, Construction, and Vehicle Manufacturing - hold each other accountable to deliver to the business needs
  • Structure an engineering operations organization for a 24/7 manufacturing environment. This includes process technicians for yield and rework, quality technicians, metrology technicians, equipment technicians, and others

Requirements
  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Material Engineering or equivalent equivalent experience. This is a highly technical role involving significant technical problem solving and decision making
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in an assembly, manufacturing, or maintenance environment, minimum 5 years managing an engineering team across several disciplines
  • Proven track record as a leader of technical manufacturing engineering disciplines with responsibilities in line with delivering a shippable product at volume, from early development to volume production
  • Proven track record managing a large and diverse manufacturing operation consisting of several engineers and technicians working on a compressed workweek schedule building several unique products
  • Proven capability to ramp production aggressively from concept to release for several first-of-its-kind manufacturing line equipment and processes. Able to set detailed expectations and identify gaps against requirements for FAT/SAT, PFMEA, Product Validation, Process capability, Equipment Maintenance, safety buy-offs, and other manufacturing standards
  • Proven consistent, rapid improvements to scaling operational efficiency leveraging experience working with PLC's (Siemens, Beckhoff, Allen Bradley) and disciplined software change control best practices
  • Proven track record of producing technically complex products to industry leading quality and familiar with quality management processes such as containments, service campaigns, supplier corrective actions, sorts, and other initiatives
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion cell chemistry and defect modes preferred, comfortable with high voltage systems and organizational processes in managing compliance to safety
  • Strong penchant for statistics and data analysis. Able to challenge statistical validity of conclusions. Must be comfortable telling a story with data. Must have implemented factory scale data solutions for process metrics, equipment availability, inventory and scrap management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and confidence in presenting to executive leadership

      $148,000 - $258,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
      Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
