Job Details

Duties

  • Provides complex cardiac sonographic studies (two-, three-, and four-dimensional sector scanning, color, specular Doppler and myocardial mechanics) in adult patients referred to cardiology.
  • Performs ultrasound examinations, modifying examination type based on pathology discovered during the procedure.
  • Receives and/or reviews ultrasound examination from physicians to determine type of procedure required and/or potential contraindication for procedure being requested.
  • Reports on studies performed regarding critical results and information found during sonographic procedures., informing physician of any examination concerns that may affect patient diagnosis and/or treatment.
  • Assists cardiologists in performing invasive diagnostic procedures, (i.e. intravenous contrast injection, trans-esophageal echocardiography, imaging).
  • Coordinates and/or demonstrates advanced sonography training protocols for physicians, medical students, nurses, Cardiology fellows, Sonographers and Cardiovascular students in a patient care environment.
  • Trains physicians and students in ultrasound examination equipment use, procedures, and interpretation of echocardiographic images and develops ultrasound-training programs for presentation of didactic material.
  • Explains procedures and limitations of methodology, while providing instructions on use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work weekends.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must possess a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from (ARDMS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) from (CCI); and/or Advanced Cardiac Sonographer from CCI

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes Performing and/or reviewing echo ultrasound tests to identify and record anomalies; and providing ultrasonic recordings of the heart and related structures; and using diagnostic cardiac equipment.
. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
