As an Engineer Structure and Bridge Wage, you will prepare bridge and structure designs for new construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects ensuring compliance with AASHTO and VDOT specifications. Prepare bridge plans, sketches, and structural drawings. This position requires field work to investigate condition of existing structures and assist in developing scope of proposed bridge rehabilitations. Position will also provide technical guidance and support related to bridge construction activities, issues, and problems.

This hourly/wage position is limited to an average of 29 hours per week and 1500 hours in a 12-month period. This position is not entitled to benefits.

This opportunity is based out of our Richmond District Office in Colonial Heights where you will have incredible natural resources like the James River and the many trails, historical sites, and cultural activities to help you balance your work and personal life. The district is responsible for approximately 18,000 miles of road in Central Virginia, making it VDOT's largest district roadway.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to structural engineering to include strength of materials, statics, and structural analysis.
Knowledge of specifications, codes and regulations related to structural design (e.g. American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials).
Knowledge of VDOT, state, and federal policies and procedures relating to transportation engineering.
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with competing deadlines and limited resources.
Ability to provide detailed reports on review findings.
Ability to enforce and demonstrate safety behaviors, as well as advocate and practice safety in everyday work activities.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with diverse groups.

Additional Considerations

A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field desired.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer's (PE) license desired.
Experience in computer-aided design and drafting, planning and scheduling.
Experience computing dimensions and quantities of material.
Demonstrated ability to perform field inspections to determine work required and interpret bridge safety inspection reports.
Skilled in AASHTO's Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specification.
