Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings - carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Join our team as an Engineering Co-Op and contribute to cutting-edge technology development while building your skills in design, prototyping, and problem-solving. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on innovative projects that focus on fiber optic connectors and enclosures using advanced technologies such as plastic injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, rapid prototyping, and optical design.
Scope of Position:
As an Engineering Co-Op, you will support technology development by applying engineering principles to design, build, and evaluate prototype products. You'll actively engage with cross-functional project teams to solve problems efficiently while meeting project requirements. Additionally, you'll have the chance to lead small-scale projects during your assignment.
This is a full-time co-op position running from August through December 2025, offering valuable real-world experience for students pursuing careers in mechanical or industrial engineering.

Key Responsibilities:
- Create detailed 2D & 3D CAD designs for new components and assemblies.
- Prototype and evaluate new components/assemblies.
- Plan, coordinate, and lead experiments related to assigned projects; analyze results using statistical tools when appropriate.
- Collaborate effectively within project teams across functional boundaries; share ideas openly while taking direction from technical experts.
- Manage priorities/timelines independently to achieve objectives within deadlines.
- Prepare oral/written reports summarizing test results for technical audiences including Development, Engineering & Operations teams.
Required Qualifications:
- To be considered for this role:
- You must be enrolled in a BS or MS program in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering.
- Completion of first-year & second-year engineering coursework is required.
Required Skills:
- Proficiency with CAD Design Software (e.g., Creo or Unigraphics NX preferred).
- Creativity in experimental design/problem-solving approaches.
- Hands-on ability-comfortable working with prototypes/test systems/tools like lathes/mills/etc.
- Strong verbal/written communication skills; capable of presenting information clearly/effectively.
- Results-oriented mindset with attention-to-detail/time management abilities.
