ROLE SUMMARY

  • Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer of the Oncology R&D Division, the Cancer Immunology (CI) Head is responsible for leading the Cancer Immunology Unit, which is focused on anti-tumor immunity and immune cell biology to support the execution and diversification of the Oncology Research pipeline.
  • The incumbent will be an established scientific leader passionate about discovering and developing breakthrough oncology therapies with the potential to alter clinical practice and significantly improve outcomes for cancer patients. Leading a large team of scientists, the CI Head will be responsible for developing the Pfizer Oncology cancer immunology discovery strategy, allocating resources, prioritizing activities and programs, and aligning with other leaders within the Oncology Research Unit (ORU) and in Early Clinical Development to advance innovative development candidates.
  • The CI Head will act as a cancer immunology subject matter expert to lead and mentor a team focused on drug discovery efforts, communicate complex scientific ideas to senior leaders and represent the cancer immunology strategy and portfolio programs to internal and external key opinion leaders.
  • The CI Head will bring cancer immunology expertise to the ORU Leadership Team in support of advancing the research strategy for the Oncology enterprise, and will participate in a portfolio governance committee that makes key decisions regarding the prioritization, advancement, and resourcing of all oncology research programs.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for leading discovery/preclinical research activities in the Cancer Immunology Unit to deliver a pipeline of novel candidate therapeutics.
  • Serves as a member of the Oncology Research Unit Leadership Team, working collaboratively with other ORU leaders to discover therapeutics that partner the most promising targets with the right technologies to enable advancement of a robust Oncology pipeline.
  • Expert in preclinical therapeutic discovery with the ability to lead, develop, and mentor a large team of scientists focused on anti-tumor immunity and immune cell biology.
  • Independently manages work across the research organization. Alongside other ORU leaders and partner function leaders, plans and aligns resources aimed at expanding our understanding of target biology, cancer immunology, therapeutic MOAs, and model development to create best and/or first in class therapeutics.
  • Merge cutting-edge science, unmet medical need, and commercial viability to identify opportunities for the development of differentiated drug candidates internally and externally (e.g., individual projects derived from discovery internally, from collaboration with external biomedical research groups, from partnerships or from the in-licensing of external candidates or programs).
  • Serve as a magnet for the recruitment and retention of top scientific talent in cancer immunology and related areas.
  • Conduct programs with the highest level of scientific rigor to discover and test candidate therapeutics quickly and convincingly in humans, making scientifically sound decisions at each key milestone.
  • Lead by example - act as a role model with a passionate commitment to cutting edge science, coupled with the desire to continuously bolster the scientific and organizational culture of ORU.
  • Manage key relationships with:
    • Pfizer Oncology Division groups such as early and late phase development and commercial
    • Internal partners, including the other units in ORU, and partner lines such as Medicinal Chemistry, Biomedicine Design and Drug Safety
    • External collaborators including academic organizations, institutes, and other biopharmaceutical organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD with 15+ years of experience in biotechnology and/or postdoctoral research focused on discovery and drug development in a leadership role.
  • 10+ years leading and directly managing teams within the biopharma industry. Ability to provide candid feedback, coach, mentor, and develop staff.
  • Strong track record of advancing novel Immunology Oncology (IO) drugs from conception to IND, preferably, including ADC experience.
  • Subject matter expert in cancer immunology with a significant publication record in the field.
  • Ability to absorb and integrate information and succinctly relay critical information to relevant stakeholders.
  • Thorough knowledge and expertise in preclinical drug discovery and understanding of the oncology landscape.
  • Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong collaborator across teams and a variety of disciplines; effective at building alliances across functions.
  • Ability to think strategically and proactively identify problems and develop solutions to move projects forward.
The annual base salary for this position ranges from $239,300.00 to $398,900.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 30.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
